Here is the machine I'm putting together. Probably wont buy it for some time but its just to get a starting point

case Cooler Master HAF 932 w/ stock fans
dvd ASUS 24X DVD Burner x1
hdd WD Raptor 10000RPM 3.0Gb/s
hdd WD Caviar 7200RPM 3.0Gb/s
ssd OCZ Vertex 30GB SSD
gpu EVGA GTX 460 Fermi Superclocked EE x1
ram 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600
mobo ASUS P8Z68-V Intel LGA 1155
cpu i-7 2600k LGA 1155 95W
cool corsair hydroseries H60 liquid cooler
psu cooler master silent pro RS850

i will plan to upgrade to 2x 460s, 16GB of RAM, and possibly another raptor. my question is that with that PSU, i know with current build i should have plenty of extra room. however, with the upgrades, i am not sure if i may be cutting it just a little close to the PSUs max power. could a 850w PSU handle it or should i go ahead and get a 1000w PSU?

thanks for any advice

850W will handle it easily. I would recommend Corsair TX850M over coolermaster. But you could be fine with less than 850w, too - let's see.

See this review of the EVGA card: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...perclocked-ee-external-exhaust-review-18.html

At load (3Dmark), the whole system in the above link uses about 300W. Keep in mind this is on an i7 920 at 4GHz. That consumes much more power than 2600K. Adding another GTX 460 SC will add around 160-170W to load power consumption. You will practically never use more than 500W, even with 16gb RAM, SLI460 (no user OC), 2600K @ 4.5GHz and a couple of raptors.

In conclusion, a quality 650W PSU will handle your system fine. 500/650 = 75% of rated wattage, that's acceptable. 750W will have more breathing room (66% of rated wattage), and even 850W wouldn't be too overkill (59% of rated wattage). You've got some choices here, anything from a low-budget but quality 650W to a high quality 80+ Gold rated 850W PSU. Whatever you do, don't waste your money on a 1KW PSU.

I recommend choosing from Corsair, Seasonic and Antec brands. You can't go wrong.

I should mention though, you may be better off upgrading to a single 28nm GPU (due late 2011/early 2012) than going dual-GPU on the 460. Going this route, 550W-650W PSU would be ideal. And if the PSU choice gives you more $ to spend, you could go for a better card than a 460 in the first place.

Thanks for the help mate. I think i may go for the HX850, just for excellent amount of good reviews on newegg. but since it will still be a bit before i actually buy it i can do some more in depth comparing and searching. i think my biggest concern was that i would be running around 790w after the upgrades and be pushing too close to the PSUs max capabilities. but you have definitely shown me that it wont be a problem. as for the GPU i wanna just stick with the 460s since ive already spent so much on the cpu and other components. i know when the new ones come out they will prolly be hella expensive and with 2 kids that isnt going to be a likely option. thanks for all your help and feel free to add anything further if you think of it

gettin the HX850

dropped the raptor and 30g SSD and went with 120g SSD

also went from 2600k down to 2500k, for a gaming rig this seems to be a far superior build
