PSU for dual-cores

With the current power needed by modern CPU's, won't putting two of them on the same motherboard mean much more power needed? I realize that with lower clockspeeds the requirements come down a little, and that official specs are a bit sketchy at the moment.

Do people here think that going to dual-core means an automatic power supply upgrade for those of us using quality 350-400 watt units?
 
I guess my 600watt investment was pretty good forethought....I plan on taking this to a dual core dual opteron setup though. It has 24pin connectors, pci-e, multiple 12v cpu plugs, etc...I will probably pick up a PCpower and cooling 510 for my dual core A64 setup....

I think we looked at it the other day....

I would think 400+ watts with strong 20amps on the 12v rail will do fine.....20amp on 12v will deliver 240 watts so you have to figure each cpu and then leave room for vid card and drive motors...i would think a dual core, dual SLI setup may need 480's minimum and 25+amps possibly....

That's what I was thinking. Right now I have a pretty bare bones rig with one HD, one DVDDL-R, a 9800 Pro, and my lovely Winnie @ 2.7. But even that wayto go dual-core I'm probably gonna have to upgrade my Fortron 350W PSU-it's only rated @ 16 or 18 amps on the +12. I'm pretty close right now as far as headroom considering that OC.
 
Drat, guess I will be upgrading my relatively new Antec Tru430 PSU. 🙁

I've got a very full system, 3 optical drives, 3 hdds, etc. 2 of each will be migrating to a dual core A64 setup. I want to leave some of the old system intact so that its still a viable system to be used for misc tasks.

That may still make it....Depends on the vid card and if you will try to OC if we can successfully do that with the dual cores...like all of us hope!!!
 
Keep in mind that for Intel you MUST have a BTX compatable PSU. There are many *very* different connectors needed for the i955X chipset which common ATX psus do NOT have

I'm not so sure about that..I'm sure plenty of motherboard manufacturers will make boards that are ATX compatible, there is very little BTX anything around right now, and with a ship date of this coming monday, I seriously doubt BTX will be a requirement, and looking at the pics of the Nvidia SLI chipset for the P4, which also will support dual core, I didn't see any out of the ordinary connectors..
 
Are we talking about Intel's dualcore or AMD's dualcore. The AMD dualcore fits within the existing thermal envelope so there is no need for more powerful psu than the one you are using to power your current AMD64 system. 89w vs. 95w I believe.

Of course, if you are running integrated graphics and have a cheap 250watt cpu that may be a problem

If you look closely you will notice that the AUX power connector on the motherboard is different. It is an 8 pin connection instead of the usual 4 pin. I wonder if PSU's with the normal 4 pin connector will work or if Intel has screwed us all and is going to force people to buy a new PSU.
 
the DC opterons will be within 89W limits (up to 2.2Ghz) (remember the 90nm processors uses way less power than the 130nm), the 2.4Ghz DC A64 might use more though. So my guess would be no, unless ofcourse you runs SLI as well.
