PSU for a new build

I'm guessing you mean the Liberty 400w? It looks nice, but I don't think 400w is quite enough juice for my system (7900gt & intel e6400).

Figure it out. This will give you ballpark figures. You might be suprised.

realistically what kind of surge compensation and cap aging should i expect in my calculation?

Read the foot notes #3 & #4. If one has many HDDs, they can be stagger started.
Capacitors age quickly when run hot. If caps are rated for 2000 hours at 85C...for every
10C drop in temperature...cap life doubles...do the math.

Here's another thing to think about, 30A is the recommended 12v amperage for a single x1900xt setup (and more than likely takes into account using it with a Pentium 4, ie worst case scenario).

One thing i'm wondering, which of the 2 suggested (ST50EF or Liberty 400W) is quieter?

what are some extra power options?
im gonna be sli/crossfire and im gonna be running a lot of juice...700w might not be enough

Bollocks it won't. If you'll pardon my english. 😉

If you're going SLI then the most power hungry (single) GPU is the 7900GTX with a power draw of around 100W at full stretch, two of them is 200W, the rest of your computer will be hard pressed to add in another 100W, total = 300W. There ya go, nearly any SLI rig can be run happily from a good 520W PSU.

Now if you're going for crossfired X1950s then you do need to look at getting yourself a good 600W, 700W if you're paranoid. G80? Ask me again when we know more than the name.

ill be getting one G80 for sure....might go nuts and get a second one. ill have a crossfire board just incase i feel the urge.

ill also have a x1600 or something inexpensive as the phsyics processor (i havnt checked if they're worth it yet)

right now im on the verge of getting a 600w PSU but that sites making me scared...will 600w be enough for sure?

No one knows for sure, that's the problem with NDAs. We just don't know and anyone who does isn't allowed to say.

Get a decent 520W or a 600W and hope. Some of the scare stories about G80 are clearly bullshit, 300W per GPU was the best one, since Intel set the max a single rail should supply as around 20W that means going over 240W is not going to happen for a graphics card 😉. (Edit: or they go for external power bricks, in which case it's time to break out the 350W PSUs)

My personal speculation is that it's going to be around the same level of power draw as the X19XX range, 100-150W or so per GPU.
