Morning all, to be honest I think i'm SOL with this one, but here's the details;

27th February 2013 - Back when I didn't really know what I was doing, I purchased an XFX 750w P1-750B-UKB9 PSU

One of these

From a well renowned UK e-tailer.

This in theory came with a 5 year warranty.

XFX Website said:
XFX offers a top of it's class 5 Year Warranty on all PSUs.

If we determine that the problem is not covered under this warranty, we will notify you and inform you of service alternatives that are available to you on a fee basis. If you want the product returned, you will have to pay the shipping fees.

Fast forward 4 years to February 2017 and the thing goes pop. Arrange RMA, send it back to the e-tailer and they go quiet for several weeks.

Eventually I get an email that says the following;

E-tailer said:
I am writing to inform you that unfortunately LN 42596 the XFX750w P1-750B-UKB9 PSU is no longer available and unfortunately a replacement is not available. We have therefore calculated a refund for you based on the benefit you have had of the goods from the original date of purchase and this amounts to £ 20 +vat. Please reply directly to this email at your earliest convenience so we can arrange for this refund to be actioned.

Many thanks

Now admittedly, I have used this PSU for 4 years, and it cost me £77.70 when I purchased it, so thats roughy a 75% depreciation.

But if it is still in the warranty period, and I am not at fault, am I not liable for a full refund if a replacement is unavailable?
The fact that it cost me £13 to post it to them makes the £20 a touch insulting to me.

So internet guru's, is there anything to be done, or just suck it up at accept my measly £7 refund.

wait, they don't have a 750 watt PSU to send you? was this from XFX or some third party repair place?

I would email XFX and see if this is standard practice.

The message I quoted above is all the information I received from the retailer. I know the model is now discontinued but they certainly could provide a different model.

I have emailed XFX and given them the details, though it seems their system is wholly reliant on the product being registered. I didn't register when I purchased it, and I can not register it now due to the retailer having the product and therefore I have no access to the barcode or serial number.

I think I may be SOL and out of pocket.

Lesson learned. Always deal with the manufacturer directly, when attempting to use the warranty they provide. XFX would send you a comparable replacement.

Though that does involve posting a power supply to Taiwan.

I only RMA to the retailer within the first 30 days or whatever the return period is. Afterwards, it's always the manufacturer. Unless they go out of business, like BFG...

Doesn't sound like it's worth getting it back from the retailer and then having to send it to Taiwan.

Yup, just have to accept that they got me.

Oh well, last time i'm purchasing from that e-tailer anyway, their service has gone to absolute crap over the last year.

you wouldn't still happen to have the paper work or the box the PSU came in, would you?

is it possible to get said number from the Etailer's purchase records?

sorry about the crap you have gone through.

Nope, 3 house moves have seen that long gone.

I've already purchased a replacement now (much better quality) so i'll count my losses and get what I can back.

I'm no help here, but I just gotta say, Antec has been good to me *knocks on plastic*. I have had two of their PSU's and they are well over 5 years old. So far so good. They even use all Japanese quality caps. Plus there's under voltage, over voltage, etc circuitry. Perhaps others do as well. I'm not sure as I just stick with Antec.
