Ok, I've been having a problem with my computer for awhile now (my old home machine). I found some virii on it and ran some scans and cleaned them up (last time I'm backing up a friend's machine onto mine before scanning the drive).
I had some weird things happen in the past couple of weeks such as the either one optical drive or the other failing to post and initialize, cd tray would open and then close right back up before I had a chance to put a cd in, cd wouldn't read some of the time when it was in, cdrw gave many bad errors when writing a cd, even a cdrw at slowest speed, the floppy drive wouldn't work (kept saying it had an unformatted disk in and if I wanted to format it, even with a boot disk) but it seems to be dead now too so I put a diff disk drive in and it works. Apps have been working weirdly too. I'd get bsods at the strangest times and say that it was waiting or trying to shut down apps would not work outside of taskmanager, or it was slow in shutting down apps, or it would hard lock and I'd have to press the reset button to reboot. Could this have been due to the virii, I don't know.
The other night after it was all cleaned off, I wanted to watch a dvd so I put a dvd in and it wouldn't play with my app. My dvd wouldn't eject and then when I rebooted, it still wouldn't eject or play so I put the paperclip in the eject hole. I rebooted again and about 2 seconds after the machine went off.. and stayed off. It will not turn on at all now.
My machine had this weird whine like a fan was dying for a long while but I thought it was one of my exhaust rear case fans. I'm suspecting that it was my psu fan now. This psu is an AOpen 300watt fan from my old HX-08 case that I've had for about 3.5yrs.
Could it have caused the problems about the failures of the drives as well as maybe killing my floppy drive? Could it just be an internal fuse or would the psu be totally dead? Would anything else have died at the time the psu finally kicked the bucket?
I think the added stress to the machine from all the virus scans and everything else probably pushed the psu over the limit and finally died since it was probably failing for awhile now. Any ideas?
