Psu causing overheating?

My friend's computer has crossfire 6870's, and have been overheating like a mother (90C), he's been powering them with a thermaltake tr2, 620W psu for a few years now.... I'm guessing it's crapping out and not delivering enough power anymore, and need a cheap alternative...
any suggestions?

I'm not sure I fully understand... Are the cards overheating and causing system shut downs or is the PSU overheating?

I'd recommend a Corsair CX PSU, you can find a good deal on them after MIR, their rebates are legit.

Alternatively, I'd recommend an eVGA 500b or 600b PSU. I have a 500b and it's been great. Running an OCed i5 3570k and two 7870s which are mining 24/7. Also received their rebate rather quickly.

One budget brand I would not recommend is Thermaltake. You will not receive their rebate and their PSUs seem to be lacking in the quality department. My 600W TR2 crapped out only after several weeks of use and considering I had to pay nearly $20 for shipping and never received my rebate, it ended up costing me ~$70... I regret my purchase and will never buy another TT PSU.

Wow, power supplies seem to have gone up in price... a lot... I purchased most of mine less than 6 months ago and nearly all of them were ~$30 after MIR... evga 500b, Corsair CX 600, Thermaltake TR2 600.

This is still a decent deal, although it would be overkill for two 6870s, but it leaves you with room for future upgrades:

I've been reading that when a psu can't deliver enough power, the components can overheat, and I knew the tr2 was a crappy psu, so I figured it could be the cause of it, especially considering how old it is... (like 4 years)
also, that evga is made by HEC, the same as the tr2... that's a bad company, no? although the warranty is compelling and reviews seem decent

The reviews for the eVGA are much better than the reviews for TR2 both on newegg as well as other respectable third party review sites. I'm not sure if they are both made by HEC but the build quality of eVGA is much higher than TR2.

For starters my eVGA 500b weighs about twice as much as the TR2 which weighs less than a stack of papers. Next, the cables are not even sleeved on the TR2 and you have to jam the (SATA) power connectors into the devices and risk breaking/damaging them.
