PSU Burned out, what about everything else?

Hello Everybody,

I used to have a problem with my old system not booting. Based on the replies I got, it seems that the problem was the mobo (Epox 8K7A). I got a replacment MSI K7T266Pro-R motherboard. I decided to use a new power supply. I went out and got a Mercury 300W PSU. I pluged everything, hit the power button, and nothing turned on. The PSU gave out an awful burning smell. I tried another PSU, and this time it worked. Nothing was on the screen. The D-LED showed all red, damaged CPU. My question is, was the CPU damaged from the first place, or did the PSU kill everything? I had my HD hooked up to the system when the PSU died. I tried the HD on another system, and it was detected OK with no problems.

Please let me know what you think. I really need some help here...

Thanks

Friends computer had same psu problem.. he just never vaccum the power supply and all those dust bunny heated the power supply up

Mobo died, all cd/rom drive died - has power supply but rom is not recognized, hdd spins but detects as those weird ascii symbols.

CPU and rest of the cards were fine.. this was a abit bx6 r2...

your psu was probably the cause.. cpu might be fine, test it on another machine if you have one...

But the MSI D-LED shows that the CPU is damaged... What I really want to know is whether the PSU killed my hardware or not. I mean, when it burns out, does it take EVERYTHING with it, stuff connected to the mobo only, or what? As I said, the HD is ok, so no problems with that. I don't know anybody who has an AMD system, so I can't really test the CPU, RAM, or the mobo.

the mobo may be dead giving out false readings.. pretty anything connected to the psu, is dead, if the psu is overload and burn out. If it's just burn out, then your other accessories may still be okay

Well, the HD is still working, and I can test the CD-ROM. If both are working, is it safe to say that there was no overload?
