PSU Blew!

Hi all. My PSU was a XION 600w PowerReal. (still returnable to Newegg thank goodness). It ran 6 hds, several fans, 2 7800GT vid cards, SB X-FI. It has been running great for 7 months but a few days ago I changed my side 120mm fan that I initially had blowing air into the case to blow air outside the case thinking it would move hot air out. I have a rear 80mm blowing out and 2 80mm fans in the front of the case blowing into the case over the 6hds. Could my arranging the 120mm fan blowing out have made my PSU work too hard?

I'd put my money on coincidence. The PSU was probably blowing out, so if anything, switching the 120mm around likely made it work less. Since the PSU fans were working less, that may have caused it to overheat?... Also, don't think I've ever heard of that PSU brand, is it el-cheapo, if so, that's probably why. Hope none of your parts got fried.

No, your rearranging of the fans did not beak anything, unless you shorted something out accidentally which I doubt. Crappy power supplies just die after a while, it's not your fault, except for not doing your research before buying.

Don't get another identical unit from newegg, there are lists of good PSU brands around the forum - they include Fortron/FSP, Seasonic, Enermax, PCP&C, etc.

That combined with 6 hdds and 2 7800GTs and probably some optical drives that weren't mentioned.... that system was pulling a lot of current

Yeah, I forgot to mention the 2 dvd burners and 6 USB devices connected to my system. I will RMA it anyway as it is still under warranty but will buy a better PSU that can handle all of my stuff.

How is THIS one? or THIS one?

Hah im surprised it even ran those components.

My brother bought a case that came with a xion psu ( i told him to buy a better psu, but of course not). Anyway it didnt even boot his single 7800gt. The thing weighed like 1 lb (generally a sign that it sucks).

I wouldnt be surprised in the least if it was going to die soon either way.

Good psu's that will run almost any component currently out can be had for 50-70 bucks. Do yourself a favor and get a good one.

Youve listed some nice psu's but you can get one that will run almost anything for about half as much as some of what you listed.

Check out xtremesystems.org

You got more value in your videocards and you want to chance them on a $55 PSU?
($95-$40 rebate) I would really take a long look on this PSU and go on to something more solid.

Hmm. single 12v @60a. Seems sweet. I might actually get this unless some thinks I shoudn't. In all the years of building PCs I never had a PSU go on me. This is new to me in over 20yrs of building computers. The PSU above seems decent.

That OCZ would probably be fine... the Fortron would be okay too, but that model's a bit low on amps

Thanks for the info guys. I just ordered the PCP Silencer 750 EPS12V. Seems to have the power I need and a good warranty. I'll use the RMAed XION for some weird project i'm thinking up.

If you look at my rig and calculate the power draw even at ~85% it's nearly 800w. At 100% (which most likely will never happen) it is well over 850w. This is also not factotring in ambient heat and humidity conditions. So 750w continuous would be just fine.

Your numbers are way, way off.

Beside that though the Silencer is a very good PSU, your power issues should be over.

The system I saw is:

Sorry, but that's not drawing anywhere near 800watts at full load, regardless of cpu and any overclocks. Spend some cash on a Seasonic Power Angel, a Kill-a-Watt, or a UPS to see what your actual draw is from the wall, then multiply that figure (in watts) by about .78 to get an idea what your actual draw is to the psu from your components.

Some numbers for you: 7800GT SLI (and other configurations) Total System Power Consumption Comparison. Now let's add in 100watts to make up any difference five more hard drives, some extra fans, and a modestly overclocked cpu would pull... adding 100w across the board does not cause the 7800gt sli's to break 400w. Remember, those numbers they're showing you are TOTAL system power consumption measured with a Power Angel at the wall. I still suggest you find a way to measure your actual usage. It's always interesting to see what's really going on.

As a side note, I noticed that that comparison has a 6800ultra at ~215w. I happen to have a 6800U in a very similar system (x2 4200+, a8v dlx, 4x512MB, m-audio revo 7.1, seasonic s12-500, 1x74GB raptor, 1x300GB seagate 7200.8, evga 6800Ultra agp) and from my measurements from my APC RS800 it uses about 180w at absolute full-load (both cores at 100% and doom3 going with me running around killing stuff). What does this mean? It means the numbers they have there, at least for the 6800U, are plausible.

I can't seem to get to your System Rigs specs through your link in your sig, but i think I've made my case here. Unfortunately you've already spent the cash on a huge psu, but at least you'll know you have a severe amount of headroom with it, and won't go around telling people your system uses 800w :) Enjoy the silencer.

Here's my system:

AMD X2 3800+ @2400
2 EVGA 7800 GT in SLI
2 sticks 1 gb each G.skill ddr mem
1 Seagate 7200.10 400gb HD
4 Maxline III 300gb SATA HDs
2 Seagate 7200.7 200gb PATA HDs
1 X-Fi sound card
1 SATA/PATA PCI Raid card
2 DVD burners
7 LED case fans
1 Diskette drive
1 Zippy USB KB
1 USB Kensington Trackball
1 Logitech Rumblepad II
1 Logitech Force Feedback joystick (Old model, first one Logitech made i believe)
1 USB external fan (to keep me nice a cool)
1 Espon 1280 USB printer
1 HP 7400C USB scanner
1 External USB HD
1 300gb e-Sata HD
1 Firewire always connected to either my ipod or another USB HD for transfering data from mac-pc or pc-mac
1 MS Sidwinder Josytick connected via old-school gameport-usb connector
1 USB Logitech webcam

I think this setup takes quite a bit of power, IMO.

Around 40A should do it. You neglected to mention the motherboard, and if the peripherals are externally powered (i.e. from the wall). I don't think your printer and scanner draw power from the USB port, eh?

buy a UPS or power angel and report back what your system is drawing at the wall. It would be very interesting.
