PSU blew when i closed the case door - why

I closed the case door of an i7 pc (while in operation) and the psu made a bang with a flash. Now if I connect a power chord to the psu - it shorts the whole room (happy about those ups's). The PSU is a HIPER s625 and now the rocker switch (1 \ 0) wont go to 0 (flips back to 1 when let go).

I guess the psu blew a fuse or something - Ivé done this 1000's of times before on other pc's (ie. open / close door while in operation) with no problems- is this something i'm not allowed to do \ does it void the warranty?

of course i'm never doing this again anyways but i want to know what it could be.

as far as i can tell nothing could have come in direct contact with the psu - only the door with the case itself.

any idea what happened there would be good.

Open the case and check to see if some metal part was extending out from the PSU, if some wire was cut or shorted in the door or if something from the case door dislodged into the case, especially around the power entry module where the AC comes it or around the power switch.

The stuck switch suggests either it was part of the problem, or it fried when the short occurred.

The other possiblity is that the PSU was close to blowing, anyhow, and the shock/motion from closing the door just set off the final blow up.

Thanks Harvey,

The other thing i remembred is getting lightly shocked from the case before, so that would suggest grounding problem - which i am sure is not related to the room.

In any case - the psu was replaced with a stronger unit (just in case) and the pc now runs fine.

oh and i checked - no longer getting shocked at touching back of case - so i guess its ok now
