I have a gateway fx-6800-o1e. I purchased it in 2009. Recently the Radeon hd4850 card that it came with died. So i decided to purchase a better card to replace it with.
I purchased the sapphire radeon hd 6850. When i installed it i noticed it had a way larger power requirement and the manufacturer required a minimum of a 500 watt psu.
Needless to say, it didn't even POST. I figured it was the 450 watt psu that was doing it. I RMA'd the card anyway for good measure. I also ordered a corsair tx750 psu to upgrade.
the specs of the current system is
I7-920 cpu
x58 mobo
8 gig of ddr3 ram (3x 2gig sticks+ 2x1 gig stick)
radeon hd 4850 video card
liteon psu rated at 450watt
750G sata hard drive
the old video card works some of the time, so after I RMA'd the new one, i put the old one back in. the system powers up no problem with the current hardware config.
When I installed the new corsair tx 750, the system would not even post, no beeps, no fans running.
I even stripped down the connections and just connected the 12v rail. only thing that worked was the led next to the 12v rail.
i put the old psu back in, the system worked.
I tested the psu 20+4 pin connector on the new psu. the only voltage I was able to read was 11.3v on the purple wire and 6.5v on the green.
I tested the old psu's 20+4 pin connector and received 15v on the purple and 12.3v on the green.
I guess using common sense, i'm thinking that the voltages on the new should be the same as the old.
I have seen a forum post somewhere that suggested some of these x58 mobo's are picky about thier voltages even if the psu is clean and properly running.
apparently gateway is keeping the name of mobo manufacturer a secret.
Anyway, I RMA'd the psu for another one. I really would like to upgrade the video card instead of replacing it with same one. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Thank you
