the first 16 minutes was exactly why womens sports are just boring to me for the most part - they have such less skill than the guys and just aren't as refined. japan was extremely sloppy which is why they were down by 4 goals so quickly. it wasn't like the usa made 4 amazing plays and had 4 amazing goals, it was more japan playing poorly than anything, especially that goal from midfield.
BS. Anytime in sport a side is dominant, the other side makes a lot of mistakes. A bad game is when neither side steps up to take advantage of the mistakes by the other team. Japan imploded in the first twenty minutes because of that first goal, which was brilliant. You can see Lloyd threading her way in because she could anticipate the ball's trajectory and saw an opening.
Actually Japan recovered and did pretty well in the 2nd half, but that goal and the aftermath did them in. Nothing in all that takes away anything from the US team - it only adds to their aura that they dazzled their opponents so early on.
You know how I know you don't know anything about soccer? Stupid BS like this is how.
The first goal may have been one of the two or three finest executions of set pieces I've ever seen. Watch it again. Everyone on the pitch is looking up for a ball that exploits the US height advantage. The Lloyd makes about a 30 yd run where Rapinoe times it perfectly, threads it through two defenders, and Lloyd buries it with the outside of her left foot. Brilliant.
The fourth goal will be talked about for years. People still compliment Beckham on a similar shot 20 years ago. In fact:
Well said.
I agree. I thought 3 of the 4 goals were great.
The 1st and 4th were awesome goals in my book.
The 4th looked easy, but it wasn't.
That 4th goal is what many players want to make - they keep practicing for just such an opening, and Carly found it yesterday - the defence was up the field, the goalie was out of the box, and she went for her kick. She added later that she had visualized this goal so many times in practice. That's the only way you get 'lucky' in international sport.
And not to forget - that first Japanese goal was also very smooth - the way the player (Ogimi?) trapped the ball, swiveled and took her time to gauge the goalie and shot it in, all in a single action. And those waves of Japanese attacks at the end must have made the US relieved that she had a huge buffer to defend.
All in all, a great game, higher in quality than many of the ones in the men's world cup last year.
