Exactly, it's not about "are they competitive enough to beat men" it's about "is it competitive enough to watch". Women's tennis and soccer are good enough, basketball not so much.
The vast majority of women that play football are more like professional amateurs. They may be paid by clubs but also have a job. Until the women's game can be well off enough to have a first and maybe second tier league where they can live comfortably just playing football, a huge gulf in class will exist between countries.

Eventually, women's football will get there, but for now, it isn't really competitive.

is there some reason why ESPNs website does not have highlights of this game, or well any soccer games for that matter

Fox Sports has the rights. Go to the Fox Sports site and you can get highlights of all the games.

Wow - England got effed in the A... They deserved to win that game and then to lose on an injury time OWN goal. OUCH!

Admittedly, I didn't watch the game, but England's goal was a bad flop PK (50 second mark), how did they "deserve" to win...?

From the angle they showed on the highlights, Japan's PK was BS too.

Well, according to some members here, the women don't dive. ;)

Damn, I forgot about this from 2011, but Japan's team is much smaller than the US's, and in that world cup they flopped all over the place and got the tying goal on a set piece.

As someone whose never watched more than 5 minutes of soccer before i've been enjoying this. Glad Fox has been airing this.

flopping in the NBA is worse

The difference being the NBA players at least don't flop around like preschoolers that have just been shot; clutching at [appendage here], writhing about in "agony", screaming like children, and then, miraculously, healing enough to play on unscathed.

Exaggerating a (perceived) foul to gain an edge is one thing. The theatrics of pretending to be in mortal pain....another.

P.S. They're also fined $5,000 for each offense.

All neckbeardary aside, great job ladies.

As soon as we talk about less flopping we have a couple prime examples in last night's game... Can't have everything I guess.

That ending though.

Them's fighting words. :colbert:

anyone who thinks golf is "non athletic" has clearly never golfed in their lives, let alone 4 days in a row, walking all 4 rounds, as well as a practice round the day before those.

I'm going to break it down.

Football
Baseball
Hockey
Basketball
Track and Feild
We all going to watch the men play over the women.

Golf
about the same for woman/men if it was not for Tiger woods no one would give a crap about men's golf so maybe the nod goes to men because of Tiger.

Soccer
Tennis
Gymnastics
The All Mighty Beach Volleyball
We are going to watch woman over the men.

All other sports no one give a crap about.

Everyone Knows this.

Are we watching the same highlights??? I get it if you think it shouldn't have been a PK (just outside the box, feet get tangled), but that Japanese player DID NOT flop. Their feet just clipped each other and she went down. The English player took a dive.

Look at each players hands during/after the "penalty". The Japanese player's hands go down to cushion her unexpected fall. The English player's hands go up, flail about a bit to make it dramatic, and then "ask" the ref for a call. All this half a second after a touch to her side.

The end result is the same because they both made the PK, but the intents of the player "fouled" were drastically different! I'm not a fan of Japan or anything (and I didn't watch the game), but I'm glad England lost after that dive.

Japan's penalty came on a foul outside the box - i.e. not a penalty
England's penalty came off a bit off a flop that happened after a genuine foul.
England outplayed Japan the entire game. Japan never looked likely to score.
Japan won on a fluke own goal at the death.

Take away both penalty kicks and England should still have won easily. But the rules of the game state the ball actually has to go in the net for you to score, so despite being the better team on the day, they scored less goals...
