Psoriasis

I found out yesterday that I have a nice case of scalp psoriasis. The dermatologist prescribed some Luxiq ($170/bottle), but it's not covered under my healthcare plan for some reason.

Now, I'm Google'ing to find an effective shampoo. Anyone have any experience with some specialty shampoos that are close to or are prescription strength?

Before the exam, I had been cycling through T/Gel, Nizoral, Denorex, and Selson Blue (yeah, I've tried them all). The T/Gel and Denorex seem to have helped the most. Maybe a stronger coal tar shampoo would curb the itching for a while.

If you have minor psoriasis, a lot of dandruff shampoos will get the job done - you shouldn't have to spend more than $10-15 for a bottle that you will need to use 1-3 times per week.

I've run the gauntlet of all the over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoos, including H&S and Pert, and nothing has worked. That's why I went to the doctor.

I have seborrheic dermatitis. I was perscribed triamcinolone acetonide and betamethozone valerate. Both are prescription, but should be pocket change compared to that Luxiq stuff. The betamethozone is available in a liquid instead of a cream, which I very much liked, what with putting it in my hair and all.

Non-perscription I was recommended Scalpicin which killed the itch. It's a leave-in, not a shampoo. It may make the itch worse when you're putting it on, but just ignore that the best you can and you should be feeling fine for quite a while.

I was somewhat leery of the T/Gel because the bottle says coal tar causes cancer. ::shrug::

yeah i used to get it bad, with a mix of ultra dry skin/scalp from swimming (i was in the water 2 times a day training for 2 hours at a time). the skin on my head basically is allergic (slightly) to chlorine, but i use lots of creams to keep it Under control.

even just washing my face, or a simple shower makes the skin round my nose go super dry and flaky. same happens on my scalp, but using Head and Shoulders for Men every day seems to keep the itchy/flakyness to a minimum

oilatum is a good product, not sure you guys get it over there, but it comes in a tiny bottle at about £5 a go, only need use it 3 times a week, and it usually lasts 3-4 weeks. works wonders.

Wash your hair w/ Apple Cider Vinegar. Let it soak for 30 min, then rinse. Do this 1-2 times a week and let me know how it works for you. I got great results.

Talk to your dermatologist and tell him/her that you need something that your insurance will cover. You could ask your insurance for a list of meds that they will not cover so you have something for him/her to refer to. There is a ton of stuff to try. They can also give you free samples that can last for a long time if needed. Locoid is currently working for me. It's messy, but I put it on at bedtime and wash it out in the morning. I used betamethasone valerate for a few years with good results, then it just stopped working. I've found that the ones that are solvent based (usually alcohol) tend to aggravate dry scalp, and burn if you've got a raw spot.

As far as shampoos, my last dermatologist said to take three or four and alternate them every time (during times it's worse, when it's doing well, just use one or two.) Most of them are meant to be used about twice a week, so you just line them up on the edge of the bathtub, use the first one in line, then put it to the back, and repeat the next day. Coal tar based ones work really well, but smell really terrible. The odor gives me headaches, so I very rarely use them. Also, I'm blonde, and coal tar will stain the hair if used frequently, so I have a good excuse, heh. T-Sal is another one you can try. It uses salicylic acid to remove excess dead skin (like it does in otc acne meds). The Nizoral is an antifungal (was prescription until fairly recently) and is used to knock down the crop of yeasts on your scalp. They're known to aggravate psoriasis.

The itching can be worse if you're having a histamine response, so you could try taking an antihistamine on really bad itchy days.

Wow, bad luck there not getting covered. Olux > Luxiq, IMO. Besides, Luxiq promotes hair growth, IIRC, so unless yours is falling out b/c of the psoriasis (possible)...

I have psoriasis and I use DHS Tar Gel Shampoo. It is the only one that has worked for me, and it doesn't smell bad and leaves your hair nice. But it does have the tar which is supposed to be carcinogenic. The safest products are those that contain zinc I believe.
