Link - Modeps' influence on Kaz no doubt.

Speaking at Sony?s mid-term strategy meeting, Hirai said that the firm will roll out its video download service on the PlayStation Network for PS3 and PSP this summer, initially in the US and then in Japan and Europe at later dates, which are expected to be specified next month.

No content or pricing details were announced. Sony also said that it hopes to roll out the service across other key Sony products by FY2010.

Kaz Hirai?s presentation materials also revealed that more than 9.8 million PSN accounts have been registered worldwide, with users having made 170 million downloads totaling 86 peta bytes of data, which Sony says is equivalent to 17 million single-layer DVDs worth of data.

According to the firm, the key game segment initiatives are to:

1. Expand content and services available on the network platform
2. Continue to expand the PS3 customer base through the strength of Blu-ray Disc
3. Accelerate PS3 sales through upcoming key franchise software titles
4. Continue PS3 cost reduction initiatives

?In the game segment, the two key drivers of new growth are non-game content and services in tandem with enhanced network capability,? the company said.

?Sony also expects to achieve profitability in this segment in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, a significant year-on-year improvement due to hardware cost reductions and an enhanced line-up of software titles for PlayStation 3."

FWIW - You can already do Netflix streaming on the 360 through Windows Vista.

Yeah, but then I'd have to use Vista... I can also do Netflix streaming with the HTPC I have hooked up to the same TV as my PS3 and 360, but I want to use my Blu-ray remote. ;)

I wonder if my HTPC remote would work with Netflix's streaming video? But then I'd have to exit out of GB-PVR, open up a web browser... it'd be so much nicer if one of my consoles supported it.

Let's hope HD movie rentals aren't an outrageous $6 per like on the 360. $4 for an HD rental is as much as I'm willing to pay.

A flash update to the web browser in order to run Hulu and Fancast would be nice as well!

My HTPC gives me DRM errors when IO try to stream netflix (I'm assuming it's because I'm using a non-hdmi output). How are you getting it to work?

In either case, I'd jump on PS3 netflix streaming just for the sake of simplicity.

Ok, I'll take that. My 360 sounds like a freakin' vacuum, but hey, it's better than nothing.

Any links on how to set that up Queasy?

I use VGA for my HTPC. Their DRM doesn't allow you to use component output.

You're right that I'm using component out.

I thought I had tried DVI output with no luck. Maybe I was mistaken. I'll give it another shot.

Link - PSN Video Download Service coming this summer but no deals are signed yet? I assume that means that the content would solely be Sony owned movies and TV shows for the near future.

Sony has reportedly failed to tie up any movie content deals for its newly announced PlayStation Network video download service.

While Sony has engaged in discussions with various movie studios with regards to providing content for its soon-to-launch video download store, no partnerships have been agreed to date, according to a Variety report.

"Sources at numerous major studios confirmed to me that while they have all talked to Sony, none have yet made a deal,? writes reporter Ben Fritz.

?The only one that's definitely on board so far is, for obvious reasons, Sony Pictures."

Fritz says that in addition to standard movie rentals Sony has been discussing the possibility of enabling downloads to be transferred from the PS3 to the PSP, which he suggests could slow down dealings with prospective content providers.

Microsoft already offers a variety of media content over Xbox Live from partners including major movie studios Warner Bros, Paramount and MGM, as well as a host of television networks.

Given that Comcast charges $5.99 for an HD movie rental, I very seriously doubt Sony's pricing will be any different.
