hah. I get it now, joc is the root word for joke or something? Crazy latin roots.

Yes. iocus, -i is the Latin for "joke." Pretty simple to see how we get our word (with medieval Latin reforms, lots of initial i's and iu's became j's and ju's, like with iudex, iudicis (judge) --> judex, judicis).

Don't stop believin...

what does jocularity (sp?) mean for future reference, anyway?

joc·u·lar
adj.

1. Characterized by joking.
2. Given to joking.

So jocularity was the wrong answer?

Unless the cellist mentioned in that question took the meaning of "scherzo" very literally or something, I'd imagine it would be incorrect. I put "ardor."

Thanks. I had forgotten the context, but I remembered that I didn't choose jocularity.

wee, What was the answer to the function(c) question? Only math one I omitted... I don't know wtf was wrong with me. Wasn't it just squareroot of 2x or something? I skipped it and then I didn't have any time to go back.

The question was something like "If f(x) = sqrt(2x), and f(c) = 4, solve for c."

4 = sqrt(2x)
16 = 2x
8 = x

Hm. I don't know why I skipped it.

This is where the TI89 comes in handy.... 😛

You need a calculator for a simple 3-step problem like that? 😛

If I'm not sleepy, sometimes it's actually quicker for me to compute things on paper rather than with a calculator.

For those of us who are inherintly lazy, nope 😛.

Pfft. These tests are a bore for me. I'm always sleepy.

They don't give you national merit based on your score, they do it based on what percentile you rank in.

If you rank in the top 3%, you get an honorable mention basically.

If you rank in the top 1%, then your name has a 50/50 chance of being drawn to receive the National Merit Scholarship. If you're unlucky, you get the honorable mention.

It's a load of bull, and there are much better, easier scholarships that you should be striving for. Why would you put yourself through all of this misery for a scholarship that isn't even that much money? Work on a free ride at some school that you want to go to (talk to admissions/scholarship offices there, get some contacts), it will be a much better way to spend your time and energy.

actually, there's no 50/50 chance of being 'drawn'. Its the top half of one percent that receive National Merit Scholarship. Simply being National Merit got me a free ride at all but the top schools (I took it at Texas A&M), and pretty much guaranteed me a spot in all but a handful of universities, regardless of my grades/extracurriculurs/essays (which were all pretty good but not great).

There was no misery either, if you were in the top half of one percent, you were named a Semifinalist..90% of the Semifinalists advanced to Finalists, and that was just because 10% didn't fill out the application that they sent you.

I'll take ~40K for one test, wouldn't you? (Note, value would be even more if I went to out of state college or private university)
