I've seen them when two major streets meet at an odd angle
When the right turn is too sharp to do under normal conditions, there is a lane that smoothly curves into the right turn and there is a Yield sign for the people turning right.

Some times you have to slam on your breaks when traffic comes to a halt or greatly slows down sudenly. I would rather people use their breaks then slam into me.

I dont come to a complete stop at yield signs, but I do usually slow down a lot even if theres no traffic that I can see.
If you cannot read traffic well enough that you need to slow down for a yield sign that has clear sight-lines, you should not be driving. Period. No exceptions.

The problem is that here in the US driver's licenses are handed out like prizes from a crackerjack box. At least a third of all US drivers have no business whatsoever behind the wheel of an automobile and we really need much more rigorous testing to weed them out. Driver licensing should be much more like competition licensing where you are required to have a full physical in addition to demonstrating car control on a closed track.

So are you saying that if there is no traffic in sight that you do not have to slow down whatsoever at a yield sign?

edit: can you clarify "a yield sign that has clear sight-lines" please?
Yes, if there is no traffic in sight, you should not slow down.

I have seen only one yield sign in my entire life that had less than a 300ft sightline and most have a 500ft+ sight line. I would say that a clear line of sight varies depending on the speed limit of the road onto which you are merging, shorter for a 35mph street, longer for a freeway; if you have enough vision to verify sufficient clear space for your car to merge, you should not slow down unless you need to slow down to match the speed of the road onto which you are merging. Most yield signs I encounter are as TheChort described; right turn lanes that bypass a signal and have plenty of clear sightline.

Your post was easily interpreted as disagreeing with the post you quoted. I was simply clarifying. Deal with it.

Most people would apologize for misinterpreting the post, not be an ass.

Thats one that I pass by almost every day coming home from work. People exiting the highway onto wilder regularly travel at like 35-45 mph and there is way less than 200ft line of sight. There are two yields since Wilder is a two way street. Would pretty much be suicide to not come to an almost complete stop or at least slow down to 5-10 mph at this little beauty of an intersection.

For the life of me I can't think of any place with a yield sign that has 500+ ft. of visibility. But its probably because this little island is so cramped.

correction: theres 3 yields there, one on wilder right near the exit, one on dole turning onto wilder and one in wilder turning onto dole. when you exit you can either go straight on wilder or you can turn left onto dole, thats always fun for people stuck at that yield sign!

Uh those aren't type types of yields that the OP is talking about. Obviously you need to slow down a lot for those because they are tight turns or have visibility where you need to crank your head around to make sure it's clear. But you still don't need to stop if traffic is clear.

Stop signs are there to have you yield to other traffic. You just need to come to a complete stop to do so. :p

Sorry, I had to bump this as a PSA and a rant.

If you don't remember from the previous thread, this is the traffic situation near where I live. Usually at rush hour it is fine because somewhat competent drivers are on the roads. But weekends get a OMGWTFBBQYOUSHOULDNOTBEDRIVINGACAR. Holy crap.

I had to work today, so I went though that intersection on a Saturday afternoon for the first time in a while. Upon exiting the interstate I see a school bus sitting at that spot. I start thinking "No way, not possible. You're trained. You have a CDL." But WRONG. School Bus is waiting to turn! And not just a couple seconds. School Bus is waiting MINUTES to turn. Traffic is backed up behind us all the way into the normal traffic lanes on the interstate. Surely once School Bus starts moving everybody will follow. NOPE. Two or three cars go through and then another one stops. Minivan behind Stopped Car floors it onto the shoulder and roars past Stopped Car. Does Stopped Car realize their mistake and start driving? No. Eventually Stopped Car moves. I think we're in the clear. WRONG AGAIN. The SUV right infront of me stops. I flash my lights a bunch but realize SUV cannot see lights. So I lay on the horn and after a couple seconds SUV finally moves. Turns out SUV didn't even have to merge into traffic at all. SUV was turning right from the lane the exit ramp lets you out on. Idiots.

Oh and all this happened 5 minutes after some 80 year old dude (I pulled up next to him to check) ran me out of my lane with a pickup truck.
