I'd suggest downloading any assets you care about before they're gone. They have a known clean download. You can't guarantee that from other sources. Even better, I'd switch to Foobar2000. It's still live, and it's still better :^D

My homage to Winamp...

Haven't used it in years since XP and Vista but it was neat music prog...

Thanks for the heads up. Man this sucks!

Has anyone had any luck using the visualizations in foobar2000? I guess this is done with Shpeck which hasn't been updates since 2009. Is it fairly easy to accomplish? If so I guess I should grab a few visualizations while I can.

Ouch, that sucks.

I still use winamp to listen to MP3s on my home PC, and used to use Winamp on my android before "Play Music" (Awful name) had matured.

This makes me sad 🙁

I don't see a reason to look for a replacement as long as whichever version you currently use works without any apparent bugs.

I SO hope this is right!!!!!

Re this: And Winamp still has an estimated user base of millions worldwide, a small fraction of which live in the United States.

Really?? Only a small fraction in the USA?😱 How is that even possible?

Shame on AOL!!!!!!!!😡:thumbsdown::twisted:

To be honest I NEVER ever noticed anything wrong with Winamp, so I am fairly sure it will last me another decade.
I hope AOL goes bankrupt though.

Only the classic skin for me. I hate glut and psuedo cool. But this one comes in infinite colors. I am no way giving up my Winamp.

Edit, case anyone is interested: My current obsession track (I always have at least one), began when seeing a recent Mitsubishi car spot. The snippet of the music track blew me away. So I delved rabidly, discovered this guy I had never heard of, Bobby Caldwell, and this most mindlessly, erotically transporting track he wrote in 1979. I got the track, then went thru dozens of uTube vids with him performing it thruout the years, (he still is), found the hands down, ULTIMATE ONE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAbvevufJIE

Downloaded the vid, then, using a freeware, extracted the audio. I also burned 12 copies of the vid to DVDs where it loops, and passed them along to friends.

I also learned all about this guy. I now, would never wanna be without either the video or the music track. It, in the way only genius music can, restores every part of you. Some drugs are all good, with no downsides.

Again, nobody come near my Winamp.

PS, heads up: the video in question may play up in the wrong ratio, stretched. Even playing it in VLC, I have to change the ratio to 4:3.

Edit: OMG, just found this from 1999 when AOL bought it for 80M! I had no clue this is Nullsoft!!!!
http://windowsitpro.com/windows-server/america-online-purchases-winamp-maker

Or that the name Nullsoft, as I only now learned, was a PARODY OF MICROSOFT!!!! And here's the rogue responsible for all of it!

http://web.archive.org/web/20070321.../story/5938320/the_worlds_most_dangerous_geek

How ironic would it be if the fruit of his renegade/outlaw loins ended up a property of very company he held in such contempt???

I think we should all hold garage sales, chip in and buy it.:sneaky:

Cause sorry, this is seriously disgusting.

i have not found anything better than Milkdrop for visualization.
anyone care to chime in?
I got it working in Windows 8 64 bit 🙂. After a few dead ends I found this page. http://vault-tec.info/post/51743506694/milkdrop-in-foobar2000-on-windows-8#notes

I didn't need to install the directx runtime.

If you still have Winamp installed and like the Advanced Visualization Studio and want to add it just navigate to the Winamp plugins folder and copy the AVS folder, vis_avs.dll and vis_avs.dat and paste them to the Winamp\plugins folder that you download in the tutorial. I just put the downloaded Winamp folder in my foobar2000 folder and added the AVS folder and files I mentioned earlier.

Please note that I have yet to try it with winamp uninstalled. I'll be uninstalling it soon. If everything works I can upload the file so all you need to do is install Shpeck, copy the folder to the foobar2000 folder, start foobar2000 and point Shpeck to that folder.

I won't be able to help troubleshoot unless it is something simple. More info and perhaps help is available here. http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=59388

Edit: Both work with winamp uninstalled.

Well, cause I was curious, not that I am giving up my Winamp, I just got Foobar to check it out I then read the guy who wrote it cares nothing about visualizations. OK< fine.

But I do, so I went to Deviantart, looked thru everything they offer for Foobar and hated all of it.

Plus what is playing at the moment, to me, don sound as good as when I play it in Winamp. But maybe I am just a bigot and upset that Nullsoft may be headed to the recycle bin in the sky.

On the other hand, I think not once did I ever get an update for Winmap. Or, any kinda patch.

I do not wanna install a portable version of Foobar to try to use Milkdrop. I think whatever I do, the result will pale compared to my Winamp.

Jus sayin.
