So I am enjoying my nightly walk, and what do I see? Some c0cksucker has his sprinkler system on. WTF?
It was 32 degrees outside. Oh, and the grass was brown, and the yard was flooded. If I see the sprinklers on tommorrow, a sprinkler head will be mysteriously broken.

That is all.

Methinks a broken sprinkler will suffice in this situation.

You're risking broken pipes if you even have the water turned on below freezing; water expands as it freezes. I know this from a very wet garage experience =x

Well, they tell you to drain sprinklers, but, otherwise having them running would keep water circulating in the pipes and thus prevent them from freezing... until they were shutoff of course.

Instead of coming on the internet and threatening vandalism, you should knock on their door and inform them that their sprinklers are on. Maybe they have a good reason or maybe they were unaware.

That's what I was thinking. He probably didn't drain them, so this is a temporary solution.

My local town hall was watering their lawn during a water ban. Right across from the police station.

Uhhh, not to correct you, but...
Solution 1: turn off the water to the sprinkler AND drain the line.
Solution 2: let the sprinkler run. The pipe is generally not going to freeze up while water is running through it.

<--- lives where it gets 20 below.

Solution 3: Don't run underground water pipes.

Yeah, no kidding! With the exception of golf courses, I can't think of a single place anywhere near me where they have underground watering systems. Around here, the only thing such systems are good for is making AWESOME potato guns. (the solenoid water valve is ideal)

Maybe, just maybe, he's running the sprinkler so that the pipes don't freeze? Ever think of that?

Whats the point of breaking his sprinkler head...more water is just going to spew out onto the lawn - yeah that solves our initial problem.

On a divergent note...........fruit farmers, like those in FL, DO run sprinklers overnight on their crops when the overnight temps are predicted below 30 degrees, esp. strawberries and peaches when in bud. Theory is the layers of frozen water left on the buds from the sprinkling will actually insulate the buds from the freezing temps and keep the buds from dying. They always do it so there must be something to it.
