A few weeks ago, it was really nice out, so I parked my beater and pulled the Trans Am out of storage. I get it up here, and notice that my gas mileage is terrible. I mean, I'm getting about 130 miles to a tank of premium (about 10 MPG) but I don't notice anything different from when I parked it, performance wise. This goes on for the past couple weeks, I'm tearing my hair out trying to find out what's wrong with my car.

I get in this morning, and turn on the ignition. I happen to glance at the fuel gauge, and the needle drops from 3/4 to 1/4 of a tank in the space of two seconds :|. That's right folks, some ass hole has been siphoning my gas in the middle of the night. Why my car is being targeted, I don't know for sure - I think he must be looking for cars that would likely have premium in the tank. I feel like an idiot for not catching it sooner. Locking gas cap goes on today.

Moral of the story...with gas prices getting where they are, a locking gas cap is probably a pretty good investment. And pay attention to your gas mileage!

If you have kids check with them. Can't say I never siphoned gas out of my parents car for my snowmobile:D

Aw, locking gas cap is no fun.

Put a 5 gallon can of gas mixed with two quarts of automatic transmission fluid in your trunk and temporary attach it to your fuel filler hose. Perp won't notice any difference in smell and probably won't notice the color change, even if he did as far as he knows it's gas.

Then just watch to see who has a car blowing bright white smoke out the exhaust the next day. Won't harm his engine so you won't end up getting sued for tainting your own gas - which these days probably would get let into court, but you'll know who it is :)

Now that's fun.

Then put on a locking gas cap.

I'd stay up one night with a bat in hand and knock em across the head for stealing and tresspassing.

hmm... the 'metal cover' to my gas tank already locks and can only be opened by a release on the inside of the car.

I would do what has already been suggested. Stay up one night and see if you can catch the perpetrator. If it doesn't happen daily, then you may stay up in vain, but if this was happening to me, I definitely would want to find out. I guess it's nice having a garage to park a car in.

Screw the bat, my gun would be a better deterrent.
