PSA: Washington Mutual just TRIPLED++ (!!) ATM fees

beer

Lifer
San Francisco is a heavily "cash only" city -> from time to time I need to withdraw cash from a non-Wamu ATM. This typically happens once a month, or so.

Checked my statement, my charge on 4/6 was $1.25, on 5/3 it was $4.

Bastards.

My citi checking account charges me nothing for this.

I've paid an ATM fee once in the past year. ATM's suck. Grocery store/walmart cashback ftw.

I was pretty disappointed the other day when I went to a wamu ATM (I'm not a member) and was charged $2. They probably gave up their free ATMs long ago but I hadn't used one in a long time. Dirty bastards.

Yikes! $4 service fee? That'll add up fast.

I'd go to a Walgreens and buy a $.50 candy bar and use the "cash back" option with my check card instead. I'd save $3.50 and get a candy bar for my efforts.

🙂

My bank does the same thing. As long as I use my debit card 8+ times a month, ATM fees are returned to me.

Everywhere I've lived there have been plenty of credit union ATMs. Most credit unions in Washington team up to provide free ATM service to eachothers customers. If you're constantly taking money out at different locations I can see why Citi would be better, but if you only do it every few days there is likely a credit union ATM somewhere around your daily routine.

That's what I do, except I buy a pop 😛 Screw you ATM fees!

I never have with a Wells Fargo check card. I do this regularly at the Walgreens across the parking lot. I'll grab something small, pay with my check card, and then get cash back ($20, or $40). I don't have a Wells ATM anywhere near me so it's a great option to avoid fees.

Yeah but you're buying something with the money; you aren't charged anything to actually get cash back.

No, it's a transaction with cash back, no fee.

FWIW, WAMU is the number 5 subprime lender in the country. Not sure if it's related to the ATM fees but they're hurting a bit.

Its funny but sometimes, I'll go out of my way to find a WAMU bank to pull out some money rather than fork the ~$2 to use an ATM near by.

Like when I was in Vegas, I looked up where a WAMU was and drove out of my way to pull out some money.
And to think, I'll drop $$100+ within the hour and not even think twice.

Jeez, you are a broken record. Trust me, they are not and it's not.

It is stunning isn't it. Find a bank with branches on every corner, and you get personal service from a real live person, no long ATM lines so it is faster, and you'll never be charged.

<- Only uses ATMs internationally for cheap currency exchanges.

I never have.

That blows.

My bank never charges any fees and in fact re-imburses me for any fees incurred at any other ATM by another company.

You're right! The lines are inside the bank 'cause they only have 2 tellers.

Around here, the only lines are at ATMs, because everyone uses ATMs. I almost always get my money faster in person at the bank since those 2 tellers are sitting there doing nothing (of course, this doesn't apply at 5pm on a Friday).

So you get charged by the bank whose ATM it is AND you get charged by your own back for using someone else's ATM? If that's true, that's just wrong. I'd close my accounts with them if they did that. I also would do the ATm card at the grocery store thing and get the $20-$30 back since that doesn't cost anything.
