Attention General Public

The user known as "AlgaeEater" has recently been hired to a small accounting firm as of yesterday afternoon.

Due to the highly unstable nature of this event, considering 2 out of 18 MONSTER.COM applications were even looked at, 3 out of 14 CAREERBUILDER.COM applications were even looked at, and only 2 actual human beings contacting him back for job offerings for some place in Nigeria through these networks, we have reason to believe supernatural or paranormal event is about to unfold.

Please be on the lookout for rivers or lakes turning into blood, frogs falling from the sky, and strange sightings of human beings on horseback floating mid-air and laughing in the sky.

Other signs may include the PS3 finally being a good console to own, and orange juice after brushing your teeth leaves a pleasant flavor in your mouth.

Please report any small red men with pitchforks and meteor shower activity in your area to your local authorities. Also be careful of falling feces from flying pigs.

Thank you for your cooperation.

---------------------------------------------------------------

On a serious note... monster.com, careerbuilder.com, and hotjobs are completely and utterly useless. Out of all the places in the world that helped, I answered a listing on craigslist for a small accounting job position and I was instantly interviewed the following week and then landed the job yesterday.

Job hunting sucks... and the so called "online job sites" are just bad. I didn't want to believe it, thinking that someway, somehow they could help me land a job through their engines was just pure wishful thinking. For the fellow job hunters out there, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE SITES. You'll keep getting bombarded with scams, temp jobs, and not even have the employer look at your resume. (They show you whether or not your resume has been received and read)

If Jackace is reading this, I hope you're still in the fight bro.

Grats! I have to agree, mailing lists and job postings are definitely the way to go. After spending an entire day at a university career fair handing out resumes the kick ass job I ended up with was one I noticed on a mailing list.

LoL. Good to hear man. Yes I'm still looking myself. I'm currently still in the running for 3 different jobs. One of which I have made it to the final interview and took the online assessments. The Director said he would let me know after him and the other 3 interviewers had a chance to collaborate. That was Friday so I'm hoping to hear either way this week sometime.

Thanks. Those job fairs are something else altogether I forgot to list on being another "Buy a lottery ticket and you could win a JOB!"

Don't take this the wrong way, but a small part of me doesn't want you to get hired. If you get hired in the same week, I fear all the world's nuclear missiles will launch simultaneously.

On second though, screw it. I wish you the best man. I have 4 jars of canned corn in the basement and an old revolver. It should last me through nuclear winter.

I know you must be feeling a HUGE relief now after finding a job. You have been looking for awhile now. I agree looking for a job sucks bad. I also agree the big job boards are terrible. The only good thing about them is once you set it up it takes no time to check for jobs. They are terrible for finding good jobs though.

For me, I'm not holding my breath anymore about jobs. I have made it to the final selection atleast 5 times now. My experience just isn't in a very good industry (restaurant), and I do not want to work in that industry anymore. This makes it harder to find a job, because I need a company willing to take a chance on me. If they find someone with the experience they are looking for it makes it really hard for me to stand out as a candidate.

I do like your "I got a job thread" though. Its very original. Made me laugh a little as well.

I really hope this job works out good for you. If its a small company you never know, you could have tons of room for growth with them. I hope things go well.

I was in your shoes just last week with the same problem. My degree is in Marketing & business management and I had 4 years general office experience. The current company that I'm now employed to looked at my work experience than my education in getting hired, and said my degree is a pivot tool for promotions and position changes in the company. After a few assessments, they hired me after comparing results with the other candidates.

It kinda irks me that through the majority of high school and college, people stress the importance of getting a degree. But it's almost impossible without networking to land a job without work experience in the related field. I think the old stigmas of getting a degree and landing a job easily after graduating based on your education is a cruel urban legend of this generation and upcoming generations.

As for the job boards... I've said my piece. They're absolute rubbish, considering a lot of the jobs on there are put by employment agencies. I never got contacted back from a lot of companies because my resume wasn't even looked at.

You are correct. The only people I know that graduated and found a job quickly were computer science and engineering. The problem is many more people are getting degrees now. It has become the new standard in many industries now. (as compared to a HS diploma for past generations) A degree doesn't really set you apart anymore.

Bwahahahah! Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo engineers!

Out of the 9 people I can think of who are engineers off the top of my head (And that I care enough to remember on the spot ;) ), SEVEN already have jobs. One bagged it in March, Three in May, Three in June. The other one is just kind of lazy about it, and the last one has had many interviews but I'm positive she just suxXx at the interview which is why she isn't working yet.
Oh and I got my internships in like 2 weeks xD

Way to go man. I'm looking for a new position myself, only I'm trying to get my family back to the east coast from Texas. I get all kinds of offers from Texas and California, but the action is so slow back east. It's quite depressing. :(

Congratulations on the new job. I agree with your monster.com sentiments, although I did get contacted a LOT by consulting companies (when I tried it in 1998). It seems like these days they just post the job listings themselves and wait for you to contact them, and they use real vague descriptions of the job and work. I guess that's a positive? A lot better than what amounted to spam.

Thanks for all the replies.

The firm is so small I already have talked to the owner and the HR Manager/VP. (They're sisters lol) In a year my position should elevate quickly out of this one since the company right now is literally in expansion. They just ate up a new office space and it's pretty vacant right now.

If anyone in SoCal in the San Gabriel valley has accounting experience or knows someone with, don't forget to keep me in mind within the following year. I'll be on the lookout to help fellow Anandtech folks whenever possible.
