I wish I knew about this when I got my s40 7 years ago. Apparently Volvo has this program called Volvo Overseas Delivery for 50 years now(used to be called something else before). They fly you out to sweden for free, put you up in a hotel for a couple of days AND sell you a volvo for up to 8% under MSRP! Im planning to get a C30 next year, and I am 99% sure I'm going to do it through the OSD program. Save a ton of money on a new car and a free trip/vacation in sweden. They even got an awesome thing going from oct 07 to april 08 where you can take a side trip to Rome or Dublin. Freaking awesome!

The c30 isn't listed on the volvo site but it is available, starting at a mere $23,875 for the v2, 21090 for v1.


I just went down to my local dealer to sit in it and check it out, and the guy said there was some 3000 dollar charge for doing business in Hawaii, WTF? So basically he told me that if I went online and build it how I want, then add 3k, that would be the price. F that, Im going with OSD, I think they even waive the destination charge and the custom build charge. anyway, save thousands on new car and a free vacation? w00t!
 
Volkswagen used to do this, too (although I don't think they paid for your trip, but I'm not sure). You'd fly over there, drive around in your VW Bus for a couple weeks, then bring it home.
 
The previous owners of my XC70 did that. They said they enjoyed checking out Sweden and the factory delivery was something they were glad they did. My car still has the original Swedish plates under my U.S. plates.
 
That sounds like a pretty awesome offer...more luxury makes should do something similar...it would be really cool IMO to get a free trip to a country like Germany, Britain, or Japan be when you got the new car, and be able to get that car when you got back to the US.

The Volvo Home Shipment Program handles most of the charges. In fact, shipping is free of charge as long as it happens within six months of pickup in Europe. You only pay to transport your Volvo from your preferred drop-off point to the loading port. Or you can use the transport services from Gothenburg and pay nothing at all.

I believe the C30 is built in Denmark so that might cause a slight problem...

Not much to see with only 1 day paid for. Might not be as cheap as many had hoped for.

EDIT: Won't you have to pay the taxes and tariffs/duties when it gets to the US?
 
BMW has a program for this. You fly to germany, get your car for a few thousand less then you would pay in the US (shipping to the US is included in the package). Then you have to put 500 miles on the car (so it's used and not taxed) and fly home to get your car. The few thousand you save pays for the trip and a week in germany 🙂.

Naturally everyone I've mentioned it to, including myself when I first heard was very skeptical. But it seems to be an up and up, no BS, customer loyalty program. I havent heard about any taxes or tariffs/duties, also, I dont know much about that kind of stuff. For my case here in Hawaii, if I do this I will be saving about 5800 dollars off the sticker price at my local dealership. When I get closer to actually doing this Im sure Ill sit down with one of volvo's OSD specialists(supposed to be one at every dealership) and get every detail. It wont be until at least next year though.

edit: oh and your time in sweden can be longer then 1 day, you just have to pay for yourself i guess 🙂 but hell, spend a day in a strange new place and save thousands on your new car, I dont see the problem!
 
I just find it hard to believe that you going there and getting the car on their dime would run you less than getting it at a dealer. I guess you'll have to report back to us so we can either point to or remove our skeptic headwear.

yea I can see why. Just imagine ripping thru the autobahn in a Porsche!! Noone would buy a Porsche here if they got to do that AND save money in their Porsche purchase.
