For those of you who have Vista and BSOD issues the cause may be a recent update, specifically KB973879. The update only affects Vista 64bit pre-service pack 2. To solve this you have two options, uninstall the update via safe mode (F8 on boot) or restore your computer to an earlier date when the BSOD's didn't exist. For the novice I'll give step by step instructions on how to fix:
UNINSTALL METHOD
1. Start up your PC and press F8 repeatedly this will bring up an option page.
2. Highlight "Safe Mode" with the arrow keys and press enter. Your screen will scroll with hundreds of files, don't be afraid, its normal.
3. Windows will load the files and come to a desktop similar to your normal desktop. Close out the annoying "you are in safe mode" box.
4. Click on Windows icon bottom left, click on control panel, next click "programs and features", then "uninstall a program". After that on the left pane, click "View installed updates". Give it time to load all the updates that are installed on your PC. Each update has a category that its in, ignore all of them except the ones under the header "Microsoft Windows". Look for KB973879 and double click it. Click yes you want to uninstall. Once the completion box appears restart your PC.
5. If this is your fix then you should be able to boot into windows on normal mode now. Once in you will need to go directly to Microsoft.com and download SP2 before installing any other updates. Vista 64bit Service Pack 2
RESTORE METHOD
4. Click on Windows icon bottom left, click "all programs", then "accessories", next is system tools" and lastly "system restore. It may take a long time for the restore wizard to come up so be patient. When it does, there will be two choices in the middle. One is preset date windows chooses and one lets you choose your own restore point. Go ahead and choose your own. When the list of displayed restore points are shown, choose the closest date that you can remember not having issues. Once this is complete your system will reboot.
5. If this is your fix then you should be able to boot into windows on normal mode now. Once in you will need to go directly to Microsoft.com and download SP2 before installing any other updates. Vista 64bit Service Pack 2
Hope this helps those in need and maybe saves you some time and money. 🙂
