Let me take NHL 2005 as an example...

It is almost impossible to get around the opposing teams defense, and if you do, you never get to keep the puck as the defence will hit you or knock you off the puck even when there is a considerable amount of distance between you and the computer.

If I try to make the same play against the computer, I need to be touching the player.

Nobody is saying that the computer is trying to piss you off, it's just a technique used to level the playing field due to really poor AI coding.

Video games cheat all the time. When programmers are to lazy to write good AI, they make up for it by allowing the computer to cheat. Either give them more resources, let them move faster, or allow them to know things they couldn't possibly know. Do you think the computer in starcraft didn't ALWAYS know where you where located from the very beginning of the map?

yup. whenever you are first place, 2nd and 3rd place magically gets unlimited red turtle shells? Also, I used to always wait for 2nd place person to pass me near the finish, and then attack them with a turtle to bring the points down. Most of the time all other players slow down so that the 2nd place person gets the most points possible. if that's not cheating, i don't know what is.

Oh yeah, mario kart cheated really bad. Just watch the tracker thing on the side with all the players, its predetermined. I once dropped a turtle shell on luigi right at the opening to a jump because that motherfvcker was right on my ass the whole game. He blew out and fell onto the track that you jumped over, leaving him a whole lap behind. I watched as he went 10,000MPH around the course to catch up back to second place right before the end.

They don't slow down, they give extra speed to the predetermined "winners" of that track whenever they get behind.

Fvck YOU luigi, you fvcking cheating piece of sh|t.

lol :p

It's never funny at the time though... I swear when I get pissed off at a game I usually want to whip the controller at the TV.

Its the lazy way to make AI challenging, rather then making the AI smarter you just make it stronger.

How many FPS was the end boss NOT a giant slow moving turd with 10,000 hitpoints and 20 rocket launchers, versus the player with 100hp and 1 rocket launcher? Its not hard to write an AI that just fires rockets at the player constantly and stands there.

Gotta go with PingSpike. It's rather obvious that some games cheat. Mario Kart is a classic example.

Oh, yeah. That one mission where you have to race Hillary in GTA: Vice City. He got a faster, better handling car, and was almost 100% perfect in his driving. You basically had to put a faster car down the block, get in it a few seconds into the race, then drive almost perfectly in this better car to beat him. If that's not cheap/cheating AI, I don't know what is.

I had a buddy who used to complain that the game was cheating... when we were playing a 1 on 1 fighting game against each other. He was one of those "WHAT? I TOTALLY HIT YOU FIRST!" and "BUT I WAS BLOCKING" and "DID YOU JUST SEE MY ARM GO RIGHT THROUGH YOU?"

Certainly the occasional glitch may occur... but not in every single fight you lose...

My most hated cheat of all time:

In Command and Conquer: Red Alert, in the higher levels of the single player missions, the computer had the ability to construct buildings anywhere on the map it wanted, while the player was limited to constructing buildings within a certain proximity of each other. It really sucks when you are defending against a tank rush and all of a sudden an enemy guard tower shows up in the middle of your base.

LOL, yeah. I remember building huge chains of sandbags so that I could put guard towers in strategic locations...

hah ... you mean how they would "speed up" to get back in the "order" they were supposed to be in? also, the computer had unlimited feathers and unlimited specials ... so i may have to agree, they cheated.

NFS:HP2 did cheat once you got a certain number of points.

Example:
8 lap race.
Usual "3 tickets and you're out" rule in full effect.
3 CPU cars.
CPU car 1 has 5 tickets and is still going.
CPU car 2 has 7 tickets and is still going.
CPU car 3 has 6 tickets and is still going.
(I was good at getting the CPU cars to run over spike strips and stuff)
I had one ticket.

It became common for the CPU cars to need 5 or more tickets before they got arrested, I still usually won, but it pissed me off that it was so blatent.

Pretty much any RTS game cheats. You're stuck with handling multiple units all over the place, moving them around, building secondary bases, fending off attacks on multiple fronts, etc. The computer can easily multi-task all of its units simultaneously.

Yup, I was going to post exactly that.

Test Drive 4:
Driving the fastest car in on the SF track.
Doing 225MPH.
Driving perfectly.
Watch as a car with a 178MPH top speed keeps up.

Next race:
Driving the car with 178MPH top speed.
Watch the computer car with a 205MPH top speed dust me.

Fighting games have also been known to kick in "perfect AI" at times. (ie: blocking for the one frame that it needs to, tweaking priorities...)

Yeah....games suck that way. I always hated fighting and sports games that did that. It's one of the reasons I like multiplayer online games. You're only fighting humans. With a little punk-buster in the mix, it makes gaming actually fun for a change.

Yeah RTS are the worst. But I suck at them so I won't complain to much. Still, when you get hit with wave after wave of multilayered complex attacks with spells casters swooping in at the same time that a human simply could not do, its pretty frustrating.

I don't consider that the same thing or cheating.
