PSA- This is National Bike To Work week.

This seems particularly pertinent this year given the current gas prices.
Welcome to National Bike Month?. If spring weather doesn?t make you want to get out and ride your bike, just think of what bicycling can do for you. Bicycling is good for your: heart, children, smile, community, wallet, stress level, lungs, outlook on life, waist line, car, knees and joints, sex life, self esteem, sleep pattern, muscle tone, soul, everything...Most importantly, bicycling can save your life.

The year 2004 will mark the 48th consecutive year the League of American Bicyclists has declared May to be National Bike Month?. The League is promoting Bike-to-Work Week from May 17th - 21st and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 21st.
I've been commuting pretty much every day for the past 3 years, so feel free to post questions about commuting here. I'll do my best to answer them. 🙂

1) I would have too far to go and probably get killed on Alabama interstates (heck, are you alllowed to even bike on interstates??)

2) Pregnant people should not ride bikes!

😛

No, you're not.

Actually, that's not true. You just need to keep the intensity level very low, but a little exercise while preggers is perfectly okay. 🙂

I live 20 miles away with no access to a shower and too much traffic congestion to really ride a bike through rush hour 🙂

THIS pregnant person should not because I would probably fall off from being top heavy. 😛 My exercise, so long as my doc allows, is walking at this point....

Wuss. I thought you Canucks were tough guys. Just put on your hockey gear and cross-check anyone who gets too close. 😛

Yeah, Skoorb mentioned you have "many persons on your balcony" these days. 😛

Work is 73 miles each way for me so I'll pass. 🙂

Sweet. That's totally do-able. My commute is 8 miles each way and takes me about 30 min.

Some advice:

[*] Get a detailed map of the area and plan a route that will keep you off busy roads for the most part. Less stress for you and the cagers.

[*]Lay out all your stuff the night before (including making sure your bike is up to snuff) so you're not running around trying to find stuff in the morning.

[*]Stick a garbage bag in your backpack to use as a poncho if you get caught in the rain (can go over the backpack to keep it dry as well)
