While this could go in the tax thread - it is critical enough that I chose to have it where anyone will notice it.

TurboTax has free online S/W filing for returns (although, they like all of the suppliers, encourage you to "upgrade for added value")

1099-misc income due to free lance work must be declared

One has an option to pay the full tax including the employer SS percentage by not using a Schedule C (does not require itemization).
If one uses the Schedule C; you can write off expenses related to that income.

The online TurboTax-Free does not support the Schedule C.

I then switched over to the online H&R Block-Free and was able to use the Schedule C. (Yes, I spent another 30 minutes re-entering the info :( )

I can not comment on TaxAct and other providers as to will their free options support the Schedule C

The bottom line for that return was $2300 in 1099-Misc income was causing a $240 tax bill by not using the Schedule C

My husband did our taxes with Tax Act and he said it does support Schedule C (he has 1099-misc income.)

I just maintain $250 in a State Farm Savings account and get free filing every year with TurboTax Premium.
