New software promises PDA and office applications for handheld - but not yet

A software update for the PlayStation Portable which leaked onto the internet over the weekend is genuine, according to Sony, but installing it will stop the console from working and may damage the hardware.

The file, which appears to have been made public on one of Sony's websites by accident, was rapidly dissected by enthusiasts and was found to include references to a wide range of new applications for the handheld console.

Among the software which the file was configured to install were internet applications such as a web browser and email client, tools including a text to speech utility and a calculator, and a word processor and spreadsheet.

However, none of the software referenced was actually included in the installer - but the references tend to imply that Sony is indeed planning on adding significant amounts of non-games functionality to the PSP, which can already play music, movies and photo slideshows, in the future.

Sony has now confirmed that the installer is real, but has strongly advised users not to attempt to apply it, as it will "cause the PSP hardware to stop operating," according to a spokesperson.

The company has said that it will repair PSPs which are damaged by users attempting to apply the rogue installer - but that it will bill the users for the cost of the repair.

Sony warns customers over leaked PSP update. :)

You know, I was thinking of getting a PDA and that PSP but more likely the PSP first, after hearing this I don't think I will even want a PDA! If I can watch movies, play sick games, e-mail, chat, web browsing on 1 device, that would be total awesomeness. They do need to work on the battery life though, thats whats really killing it.

though how would word processor work on that? they'd have to make a keyboard for it or something

I was thinking the same thing, maybe an on-screen K/B or handwriting recognition S/W ala Palm OS/Pocket PC will be made available first, followed by an actual QWERTY K/B peripheral?

Sony has a usb keyboard on top of the psp like so:

http://www.gizmodo.com/archive...sp-keyboard-016141.php

The PSP battery life will be better WHEN your not playing games. The games eatin to the CPU and haing to spin up the UMD. So without those two you will get better battery life.

It would be alright but not as useful without a touch screen.

I know that if it can do everything they say it can, I will pick one up. Hopefully they will release some RPGs for it soon.

Shipments of the PlayStation Portable console have reached 800,000 in Japan since the system launched last month, and Sony has now pledged to increase output by April in order to accommodate overseas launches.

The new shipment figure was announced by Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi at a press conference in Tokyo, where he also reaffirmed the company's commitment to launching the PSP in North America and Europe by the end of March.

Monthly production of the PSP is set to increase by 100,000 units to a million units a month in April, which will help to meet the demand of the overseas launches, according to Kutaragi.

Production levels will continue to ramp up throughout the year, with two million units a month being targeted by Summer, and a final target of three million units per month thought to be the goal for next Christmas.

Addressing the low shipment numbers of the PSP to date, Kutaragi confessed that the sales figures are disappointing, but pointed out that this is down to lack of supply rather than lack of demand.

"I must admit (sales) are not big enough yet," he commented. "But demand is so strong that we already do not have enough supply... [800,000 units] is not a small volume, but it's not good enough to satisfy the market either."

Kutaragi also confirmed that Sony is hoping to add mobile phone technology and communications functions to the PSP "in the not too distant future," and said that a web browser for the device is on the way - but he downplayed rumours of a word processor and spreadsheet module, saying that these programs would be difficult to operate on a handheld console.

PSP sales hit 800,000 as Sony pledges higher production

So what is the REAL price? I saw some preorder offers on Ebay for around $220 USD while many sites are stating prices of $300 USD and over.

I have an EBGames preorder for $20 but they have no information whatsoever about the PSP (I just called and asked again 4 days ago).

According to Sony, the PSP Value Pack will be available in North America on March 24, 2005 for a suggested retail price of $249.99.

Sony aims to take handheld gaming to the next level with the PSP (CNET editor's take). :)
