PSA: Sony has bricking update at the moment

4.45 seems to cause problems with PS3s with aftermarket HDDs of 500GB and higher.

Just to be on the safe side, probably best to avoid the update until they fix it, even if your drive is smaller. Doesn't appear to affect a ton of people, but just an FYI.

Update : it appears Sony has already pulled the update, so it should be safe for now to go back online with autoupdate enabled.

For those with a bricked PS3, people have already fixed it by pulling the drive, attaching to PC, and going through a couple steps. Bingo, back in action. A bit easier than fixing RROD/YLOD lol.

Are the people losing the data on the drive when they fix it? That would suck if it was full of games from psn+ and they had to download the stuff over again

Why on earth would you even possibly need 500GB on your PS3????? I've never understood the point in even changing out the harddrive.

Get PSN+ and you'll understand why. I wish I put a 1TB HD in there instead of a 320GB. Running out of space already.

For my PS4, I'm gonna put a 5TB HD in that thing.

I have PS+, you know you can delete games you aren't playing right? You can download them later.

Some people don't have insane internet connections. Like me for example I've only got a 10mbps connection(Thats what I pay for, get 6-8) and I share it with 15 people. I can download games, but it effects other people, and when I have to do it twice it pisses me off.

I rather not repeat the download process. And there are other things besides games that I store on the PS3.

were will you find a 5TB 2.5" drive

In the future my friend, in the future. 20 years ago, HDD were measured by MB. Today, it's measured by GB. In a few years, it will be TB.

They're reaching the limits of how much you can fit on a platter. Darn laws of physics getting in the way. SSDs are a different story, especially with stackable chips.

If you really wanted to, you can use external eSATA drives with the PS3. Just gotta connect the cable to the internal port and run it out the side. Not an elegant solution but it supposedly works. Most reports say 1TB is the file system's limit though.

Back on topic, really glad I set my PS3 to auto update in the afternoons instead of overnight. Dodged that bullet. Hope they do some better testing with the PS4. This isn't the first time Sony has goofed up a FW update.

Uh they're making real progress on it actually. Have you read about any of the IBM research?

Most want a 400000 TB drive in their PS4, am I the only one ready to throw a 256-512 GB SSD in instead?

21st century people... Do you still use cassette and VHS too?

Hell even DVD and Bluray is obsolete to me, only reason I like physical discs is as a collector and having the native stand alone media for a console. I prefer my older carts to optical media though.

Even the NES had solid state storage in the 1980s, wtf discs!? Time to come back full circle: 32-64GB mask ROM SD cards!
