PSA: Solving the vertical video syndrome problem

But the people who shoot vertical videos won't use it. Now, YouTube has, and rightly so, been in a lot of hot water lately. But if they ban uploads from anything but this app, they will redeem themselves.

I saw that Engadget article in my Facebook feed (since I "Liked" Engadget before), but I didn't click it.

Anyway, there are *some* cases where vertical video is appropriate:
  1. If the subject you're filming fits vertically and it's only meant to be viewed on a phone
  2. If you are in an emergency situation and you need to document something NOW while keeping a good grip on the phone.

Otherwise...people are just stupid.

A lot of it is a proximity thing. Hard to use landscape in a small room and capture anything but torso. Of course there are plenty of videos taken at a distance that are inexplicably vertical, too.

I attribute a lot of that to phone design. Most people will never hold their smartphone sideways...they're made with the camera at the top, and the bottom is where there are no side buttons. Hold it sideways and you have numerous issues. You hand is going to be over the screen (or wrist awkwardly cocked sideways). More likely to to errantly hit buttons or cover up camera lens if you hold with two hands.

reps for using the correct term "horizontal" rather than "landscape." landscape is a content type, damnit.
