in my 2nd week of having some really itchy skin right now (2nd time i've ever had poison ivy) i just thought i would pass the good word along for other noobs such as myself who thought roundup would kill the plant as well as it's toxins.

that is all.

Yeah you would need to spray the plant with a soap based spray to neutralize the urushoil. This is the toxic compound present on all parts of the plant that causes the poison ivy reaction on human skin. Being an oil, soap destroys it. Even dead poison ivy can still hurt you (the oil can remain viable until decomposition)

Roundup does indeed work on poison ivy, just probably not at regular strength. I buy the concentrate and mix it double strength so the 10 gallon package makes 5 gallons and nothing survives that. Poison ivy is tough though and come back easily, so you have to keep after it. If you treat the problem spots several times early in the season you can control it well. If you spray it once it will probably come back.

Pro tip: Don't scratch your balls.

My bro was clearing some of his land and didn't know it was ivy. Took a leak....lol

Well, anyone who has grown up in the northeast was probably warned at some point that you can get a reaction to the leaves of dead (i.e. cut) poison ivy plants, because the oils are still there. I was also told that I shouldn't be exposed to the smoke from burning poison ivy, but that's probably bs.

Of course, I learned all of this back when people went outside and did stuff.

1) True. All parts of the plant are dangerous even when dead. Brown and brittle stuff can still nail you.

2) What you were told was not BS, burning poison ivy is very bad.

I went to my buddies house and his garden looked awesome. I asked how he took care of his weeds and he said vinegar and salt but not too much salt in a spray bottle. I have yet to implement it but it was amazing.

It's not BS. The oils are still in the smoke. It can be pretty bad - and affect anyone who breathes it in.

Always wear protection. Gloves at a minimum. Mask or goggles are always nice. Full length sleeves.

Use heavy duty garden trash bags for the mess. Put it straight in the dumpster. Dont let it sit around the yard, or the house.

Just be happy that you don't have a wood burning stove and got some poison ivy infested wood. That happened to my dad and he had to make a trip to the ER. Poison ivy inside your lungs is a lot worse than on your skin. =(

As a kid I got bad cases of poison ivy 3 times in one summer. Ruined little league baseball for me.

The risk that is posed by inhalation of smoke from burning plants containing urushiol is not at all BS. It can be life-threatening and does not sound pleasant even if you survive just fine.

Yikes. Never realized how easy it might be for that to occur. I always just thought of brush fires as the real threat.

Ouch. I didn't think about it that way.

My 8 year old nephew was at a neighbors house where they had a nice fire going in a fire pit. They (unknowingly) put some wood logs in it that had poison ivy on them, and two days later my nephew was in the hospital. His face looked like he'd gone 8 rounds with Mike Tyson , he was barely recognizable, and they had to give him all sorts of nasty stuff just to keep his lungs functioning properly and his airways open. Not good at all. Unfortunately, the dangers of burning poison ivy are real.

My childhood friend's dad would frequently warn us about burning it. He says he had it in his lungs AND EYES, which put him in the hospital. Yikes!

Poison ivy smoke can be deadly... seriously.

My buddy cleared out an entire fence row with a bobcat.
They made a giant brush pile and burned it.
He was in a drug induced coma for a few days while they treated him with steroids to reduce the swelling.
He had a reaction over and inside his entire body.

Even when he came back to school (2 weeks later), he was messed up for a while (puffy, red, watery eyes and nose).

He was a "tough guy" too.
