PSA: my PSN account was compromised

Just an FYI to the community in case it's a widespread issue. Got a fraud alert from my bank about 4 charges this morning all from sony. Tried to log into my PSN account and I couldn't get in. I'm on the phone with Sony right now getting it taken care of, but keep an eye on your accounts in case this wasn't an isolated thing.

This has happened to me before when I first got a PS4. I logged on one day and somebody purchased FIFA points or whatever and I was like WTF. SO thanks for the heads up as I will now check my stuff!

that sucks man. did you ever change your password when it was breached back in the day?

Pretty sure I did, I'm not sure why I wouldn't have as I remember that vividly. What's odd (now that I've looked) is that I actually got an email from Sony this morning saying that my sign-in ID got changed. What's weird is that it says my "new" sign-in ID is the same thing it always was (my email).

Then it says "we recommend verifying the email address used for your sign in ID". Uh... why would that be only recommended and not REQUIRED? Every other service sends an email confirmation to my current email account on record to verify a change to a new email (and then usually there's a 2nd verification on the new address too). I wonder if Sony has a 2step verification that I haven't enabled.

That being said, it was a rather painless process to get it fixed (if it sticks anyway). I was on the phone for a while, but most of that was waiting for authorization from another department to process a refund. I got the email reset to what it should have been, password changed, and all consoles on my account were de-authorized, so I can add on the correct ones again at home.

Chase and Sony customer support were both helpful in catching and fixing this issue, respectively. Hopefully the refund goes through without issue
