This array did not have an alarm point setup, don't know how long I've had TWO drives failed on it but just discovered that tonight. Oops.

The backups are good, but hopefully I don't need to use them. Still a pain in the ass if I need to rebuild all the VMs etc. Only the raw data is backed.

That reminds me, when I was walking past my NAS (one of them), I noticed that the "Status" LED was solid red. Need to look that up, but doesn't sound good to me. Hopefully I haven't lost a RAID5 array, that at worst it's just "degraded", possibly due to a power glitch.

Edit: Oh, just remembered that I got in a 10TB WD drive a few days ago.

I built a NAS earlier this year and decided to go with unRAID as the OS. There was a nasty power outage a couple of months ago where the power dropped out and came back on about three times, which really screwed with the server - I didn't have a UPS.

When the power finally came back and stayed on, one of my drives was flagged as having errors and was taken out of the array. A full parity sync/rebuild fixed the issue, and I haven't had a problem with that drive since.

Still need to get a UPS... Strongly considering this guy:

I would consider the Eaton 5PX series, but I've heard the fans on those are incredibly loud, and I haven't been able to find out for certain if it's just when the UPS is delivering power rather than just in standby; if so, I don't really care.

Anyways, besides that one incident, everything has been running perfectly. I have a 14TB parity drive, with six other drives adding up to 70TB; I'll be taking out one of the 12TBs and using it as a backup drive as it's currently empty. I'm only using about 40TB right now.

Oh yeah, UPS is a must for a NAS.

This is the UPS I use: https://www.tripplite.com/750w-powe...rger-auto-transfer-switching-2-outlets~APS750

I eventually want to upgrade to a dual conversion setup though as I had one incident where the power did not cut cleanly, and it did not trip fast enough and the NAS dropped hard and I had to rebuild the boot loader. Not to mention the potential damage to all the drives as the head does not have a chance to park before the platters spin down.

I ordered two replacement drives but it will be a while until they arrive. My game server's database server VM is on that raid array among other things so I need to start deciding on if I shut stuff down to reduce stress on the existing drives.

So I got 2 drives coming from 2 different retailers, hoping one of them arrives faster than their ETR... Canada Computers says it could arrive as early as tomorrow but I doubt that, but if it arrives next week I'll be happy. Memory Express is at least 13 days.

At least after all this I'll have spares on hand, or I might just throw the 2 extras in my cold storage backup rotation.

Been shutting down less important VMs that are running off that array to at least lower the IO it's getting.

It's meant for rack space so they don't care about sound. This is my 9135. I have two of them and four expansion modules

Nice! What do you need all that power/runtime for? Your rack is empty! :p

Well I bought them for spares. I still need to move my stack over lol. I paid like C$300+ tax for the six pieces, the rack, plus two pdus. So less than a buck a kilo for the UPSes. A film studio was shutting down and auctioned off basically everything in their studio. I also bought another rack for like 20.
The M6 nuts and bolts I bought on amazon cost more than that.

Drives finally came in. Tested both drives fully, now rebuilding.

Some of the other drives are showing errors and I have 2 more drives on the way from a different retailer so I think I'll just keep those as spare. I have two extra slots in my NAS so it is tempting to grow this array by another ~1.8TB but think I'll refrain from doing that as the other drives could let go soon. The drives have around 60 thousand hours on them.

I eventually want to upgrade some of these arrays to larger drives though. The md1 array would be a good candidate. It's all 1TB drives in raid 5. I could probably add 10TB drives then convert to raid 6.
