A man trying to hide from police in a grass field was given away by his ringing cell phone.

Marion County sheriff's Deputy Jason Bernards tried to stop the man's 1991 Dodge Dynasty sedan about 8:15 p.m. Saturday on Lancaster Drive NE near Silverton Road NE because the vehicle didn't have headlights on, sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Sheila Lorance said. The driver did not stop, instead accelerating to speeds of 70 mph in the city and on country roads into Woodburn, Lorance said.

The driver almost hit a car, missing it by inches, ran a red light and passed at least one car in a no-passing zone during the pursuit, Lorance said.

Sheriff's deputies, Oregon State Police and Woodburn police put down spike strips three times, but the driver avoided them, Lorance said.

Spike strips set in two places on Settlemeir Avenue in Woodburn deflated the vehicle's tires, officials said. The driver steered the car into a field off Boones Ferry Road NE, then ran into the field of grass seed, Lorance said.

A Keizer police dog and handler were called in and found the suspect when his phone started ringing, Lorance said.

Police arrested Evaristo Tenorio, 48, of Salem on charges of attempting to elude police, both felony and misdemeanor charges, reckless endangering, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

He also was arrested on a warrant for violating his parole for absconding supervision since September 2008, Lorance said.

You have to love when dipshits run from the cops for smaller offenses just to get multiple felonies added on. Tis a shame this idiot didn't kill himself.

He'd have been arrested anyway. He ran because he'd not checked in with his parole officer since 9/2008.

Additionally, this happened about an hour from my house.

Yes, I read that part too, parole violation is really nothing compared to what he is now charged with though.

If he's "smart" enough to skip a simple parole check-in, do you think he'd be "smart" enough to consider the rest of it? What does he care anyway? Parole violation = jail. What does he care why he's going back to jail. Catagorize his offenses all you want but he ran to avoid getting locked up regardless of the offense. Happens all the time.

When someone's driving down the freeway at 150mph running from the cops, do you really think he cares whether he's using his turn signal to change lanes?

Besides, this is Oregon. You can't go 10 feet without bumping into a "Tenorio" :p
