A man trying to hide from police in a grass field was given away by his ringing cell phone.
Marion County sheriff's Deputy Jason Bernards tried to stop the man's 1991 Dodge Dynasty sedan about 8:15 p.m. Saturday on Lancaster Drive NE near Silverton Road NE because the vehicle didn't have headlights on, sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Sheila Lorance said. The driver did not stop, instead accelerating to speeds of 70 mph in the city and on country roads into Woodburn, Lorance said.
The driver almost hit a car, missing it by inches, ran a red light and passed at least one car in a no-passing zone during the pursuit, Lorance said.
Sheriff's deputies, Oregon State Police and Woodburn police put down spike strips three times, but the driver avoided them, Lorance said.
Spike strips set in two places on Settlemeir Avenue in Woodburn deflated the vehicle's tires, officials said. The driver steered the car into a field off Boones Ferry Road NE, then ran into the field of grass seed, Lorance said.
A Keizer police dog and handler were called in and found the suspect when his phone started ringing, Lorance said.
Police arrested Evaristo Tenorio, 48, of Salem on charges of attempting to elude police, both felony and misdemeanor charges, reckless endangering, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.
He also was arrested on a warrant for violating his parole for absconding supervision since September 2008, Lorance said.
