The iPod touch is really the best non-phone PDA on the market; it's unfortunate that Apple refuses to market it as such. I don't know if they are still gun-shy over the Newton fiasco or not, but since all of the major players have basically abandoned the PDA market.

And, yes I do think there is a market; that market is all of the college students that live on campuses across the United States and are within WiFi coverage 24x7.

There's going to be some amazing things coming for Touch, whether official or not. Skype on your Touch?

Congrats OP, you made a fine purchase.

I got one too as a work Christmas present.

Truly neat..............BUT..........

You could keep the phone, bluetooth, camera, mail (what more do you need after Gmail????), and anything else it might end up doing for ONE thing..........

A FVCKING S-P-E-A-K-E-R!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ordered an add-on off ebay which will probably be fine, but obviously more obtrusive and there's obviously a market for it 'cuz they're all over ebay..........so why didn't they just give us a teenee tiny little freakin' speaker???????

(Otherwise, it's 99% cool) Haven't jailbroke mine yet 'cuz jailbreak apps aren't all that worthwhile to me yet.

EDIT: It's an iphone but ipod is essentially the same on both. Airplane mode increases battery life and improves noise floor. I suppose you could disable the wifi on the touch for similar results. IMO where the iphone excels is with its built in speaker if you're sharing a video with someone.

I get to use it as a phone too! It's in the ship's cellular repeater although outgoing access is barred. (not that I would call anyone hehe) It's cool though if someone calls my extension their name and extension (cabin number) are shown just like normal caller id.

which case you rocking there? looks pretty heavy duty.

That's interesting, because I was under the impression that you could not add appointment and contact info directly on the Touch, and that synchronization with Outlook was one-way (just like previous iPods). Those are two severe limitations for a PDA.

Is this not the case?

The contact/appointment thing was rectified as of the latest firmware. As for the synchronization, I just use IMAP for email, so it's not a problem. I'm not sure how it handles calendar/contacts syncing with Outlook.

Interesting. It looks like it can sync both ways, even with Outlook. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306413

'Like a Bi-Sexual!'
-'Yes Ted, that was the joke'

It is nice to see that it can sync with Outlook. It always makes me happy to see a company adding in functionality that they didn't have to, or giving functionality to things that don't necessarily warrant it. Like the Zune30, you can upgrade it to the same firmware as the Zune80... Microsoft didn't have to do that, but it is one of the reasons that i really think that the zune is a good competitor for the ipod, and might make Apple sit up and change things.

I'm looking forward to the addition of more apps from apple. I hope they get along far enough that we don't have to "hack" and load the apps ourselves. FANTASTIC machine, but i'm still miffed at apple and verizon not holding hands yet. i really wanted the iphone :( the touch is nice itself though i suppose.

Verizon is a PITA. They are my carrier (for another 10 months) then I'm going to be shopping for someone else.
I hate how they lock down & slow down their phones.

The 10% discount at Amazon.com is still going. And with all this info about all of the iPhone's apps being usable on it...it's getting hard to resist...this is indeed the ultimate PDA.

I can't afford one right now...must be strong :(

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a HDD version next year. :)

I don't want them to either.....though actually I don't care..........I just want to be able to quickly pull up a YouTube vid & enjoy it w/o having to have earbuds in my ears.

Or show somebody else a clip w/o having to give them MY earbuds & swappin' earwax.
