Sometimes sarcasm is hard to distinguish from a genuine comment...but in general, it's pretty easy to see. Even in that thread, when I know nothing about penny stocks, I would have guessed the comment to be sarcasm based on the content of the post.

Just take EVERYTHING you read online with a grain of salt and you'll be alright. Magazine and newspaper columnists have used sarcasm in print for years with little trouble. Albeit not everyone in this forum is as literally gifted as a professional writer, but it's still possible to discern when they're making a joke or sarcastic remark.

sure, it's hard to tell when someone's being sarcastic on the internet...but considering the type of people who post on internet forums, you can probably assume they're being sarcastic more often than not.

Besides, it's funny to see people get all flustered when they don't pick up on the sarcasm.

Take a look at the first response to this thread and you'll see why i'm PSAin'
The problem with that thread is that it didn't seem sarcastic - just a question by an investing n00b. I've learned well that what i think comes off as thick sarcasm to me may not to others. That's my fault; my bad joke, not theirs. So, I try again.

Don't you mean

DONT YOU HAVE A SPIDER TO CATCH SYRINGER????

Because, you know, otherwise, Syringer might take it as a real warning, like he had a spider running amok in his room. OH WAIT HE DOESNT AND HE KNOWS IT BECAUSE HE DOESN'T USE HIS COLON AS A HAIRNET.

I'm sorry, but if you don't know that penny stocks are one of the riskiest investments, you're not an investing noob, you're an investing retard.

That's more ironical than sarcastic, but to think it was anything other than a witty reply is just dumb.

Who says ironical? Wouldn't ironic suffice? I mean, you use sarcastic right after it to describe the same thing? Why not write sarcastical? :)

I know ironical is a word, I have just never seen anyone use it. The same is true with sarcastical.
