PSA: If your carry-on does not fit under the seat, don't...

If your carry-on luggage does not fit under the seat, don't put any important items in it. Just had an experienced with Delta taking my carry-on because they did not have space for it in the airplane. They checked it in instead. My carry-on met their criteria. I even put it in the carry-on checker contraption, and it fit.

I didn't have time to get my important items out. Also, I had some money there because I thought it might be safe to store money in different places around me in case some picks my wallet. Now my carry-on luggage is lost, and I'm hoping that I'll get it back along with all the contents inside. Tsk.

This is a result of Delta's $25 checked baggage fee. They want your money, and they'll do anything they have to to get it. Everyone knows this.

The dimension checker is intended for the overhead compartments; not the under seat area.

you're missing the point. he's saying bring valuables in something small enough to fit under the seat because there might not be space in the overhead bins. though, he's not expressing that very well. it could be that his bag didn't fit in the bins despite fitting in the checker.

anyway, it probably didn't make the airplane and will be on the next flight in.

That's the main reason I ignore sound advice and pay a $75 annual fee for a USAirways credit card. It allows me to board right after first class and that means I'll always have available overhead space right above my seat. It's not smart financially but not having to check a bag because there's no space (and there is almost always no space for late boarders) makes traveling less painful for me.

You'll probably get your bag back intact.

DELTA = Don't Expect Luggage To Arrive.

I abhor flying.
Some people hate dentists and never go until they are practically dying of pain! That's how I feel about flying - 2X!

Most airline websites and travel info state that you should not place valuables inside checked luggage, but keep them on you.
Delta Baggage Policy
Delta is not responsible or liable for cash, camera equipment, commercial effects, computer software and equipment, electronic equipment, fragile articles, jewelry, lifesaving medication, negotiable papers, irreplaceable business documents, works of art, or other similar valuable items contained in checked or unchecked baggage. These types of items should be carried on by the passenger.

That's why I always put important items in a backpack and the rest of my carryons in a carry-on bag or luggage. usually my carryons just consist of clothes and chargers and stuff (so my backpack doesn't look like a bomb when they xray it).

The possibility of having to gate check your carry-on is one of the words aspects of flying. What really grinds my gears is that a lot of people put their "personal item" in the overhead bin in addition to their carry-on bag. That's my space! And then there's the people who put their carry-on in sideways and close the door so no one realizes there's more room in that bin (these people just don't know the right way to do it).

No disrespect, and I suppose your experience/reasons/whatever are your own, but IMO it's a shame to abhor flying. I've been flying (not a hell of a lot, I grant you) since way way before the security hassles started and I've always felt that flying was/is glamorous, and even the security checks (I got pat-downs on my last two flights) haven't changed my mind. I asked my cousin a couple of weeks ago his opinion, being curious if his immense experience flying (his career was diamond sales, like his dad, and he flew all over the world routinely and constantly), and he said he's always loved flying. He said not so much domestic, but especially foreign travel. He didn't put down on domestic travel, but asserted that foreign travel was quite a bit better.

BTW, avoiding dentists is unwise, as is not exercising regular effective dental hygiene.

BTW2, you should see the bag I shoved under the seat of my SWA flight a couple weeks ago. It was humongous. There was nobody trying to cull me for stashing in cargo.

I don't b uy that you didn't have a chance to remove your cash and other valuables from the bag.
I would never stash cash in a bag, in particular one that was checked. If you are worried about a pickpocket, don't put your wallet/cash in your back pocket. Put it in a pocket that you feel confident can't be accessed by a pickpocket and you are good to go. For instance, I've been in crowded venues (e.g. music) and if I get nervous about my wallet, I transfer it to a front pocket. A PP is not going to figure you've put your wallet in your front pocket. They are looking for easy marks, and they are plentiful.

If it doesn't fit, push harder. If it still doesn't fit, stick your legs out and hide it as best you can. I've never had a baggage problem I couldn't fix with more force and a strategically placed leg and I've flown all across the US, to Europe and South America.

Never would I suggest putting off dental visits but people do because they fear seeing them. Some just don't like the idea of pointy things in their mouth or high pitched noise of drills, etc.

Funny thing is flying does not scare me - I just don't like it. Doesn't have much to do with being "inside a flying aluminum tube at 37,000 feet" [sic], just that I don't like airplanes. Helicopters are even worse.

Airport "security" is a joke. Real dangerous people can (and do) get stuff by if and when they wish. TSA continues to make people safer by finding gramps' toe cheese scraper. :D

First time it happened to me and the flight attendant was rushing because they wanted to take off on time. Unfortunately, I was one of the last ones to board because my zone number was called last.

Plus, this was intended to be a carry-on, so I had money stashed in the bag intended to fit in the overhead bin. I also carried money in my wallet, my pocket, etc. For my bag, I stashed the money with my underwear and socks. I actually put it in a sock and wrapped it with my underwear.

I haven't checked a bag in several years. Now that any goof ball working at the airport can legally rifle through your bag I pretty much refuse to. No, it's not the same as the x-ray machine or a hand search while you are present. They can't steal anything that way.

I usually keep a small duffel bag in my carry-on for this exact reason, so I can take my valuables out and find a place to cram the smaller bag. Non-US airlines are usually very strict, they usually make me check my rolling carry-on.

Bags that needs to be gate checked because it does not fit inside the plane I always ask them to remove any and all valuables, as once you are in that area, you are leaving your bag without any video camera in sight. DON'T let the airline agents rush you, you are there they cannot leave without you, take your time and do whatever it is you need to do.
