Seriously.
If you're going to vote for Bob Barr in this election, you're better off not registering to vote.

yes, but sadly we have to choose a lesser of 2 evils every 4 years.

Registered Republican who voted Badnarik in the last 2 elections..will likely vote for Obama this election.

Yeah we get enough of that with activist groups picking up homeless guys off the street and taking them to register to vote and vote at the same time.

Do you have to register as a specific party supporter to register as a voter in the US?

In Canada, we simply register as a voter, and do not have to reveal any party affiliation.

Cynicism is no excuse to sit back and let the decision be made for you. If you care at all about the United States you will vote, if only as a symbolic gesture. Which in my case may very well be if I end up voting for someone who isn't McCain or Obama.

Depends on the state. In Virginia, where I live, you can't register in any specific party. I don't think any state "requires" it, except for primaries, but most allow you to if you want.

Nope. You can choose to declare support for a specific party in primaries but are not required to do so during general elections.

Umm, my post wasn't about cynicism. It was agreeing with matt on the importance of being an educated voter.

and i don't want to be selected for jury duty.

vote 3rd party then, I believe you are in NC and 3rd parties need 5% of the vote to remain on the ticket for the next election.

In some states you have to register a party but this does not mean you are restricted to voting on candidates in that party during a general election.

In no state are you required to register with a party to vote in the general elections. You may have to register to vote in the primaries, but those aren't real elections so they can set their own rules.

My argument is that regardless of cynical views of American voters/citizens as being (willfully or no) uneducated boors, at least for this forum of generally literate, generally technically savvy people they can educate themselves and make an informed choice.

So my original point stands: register to vote!
