PSA - if you are flying with United or any US airlines, be prepared to pay more and get less...

If you want to buy the cheapest ticket, you will only able to have one carry on bag and not two and other restrictions. Delta has other restrictions and American will launch new program in 2017. In short, passengers will pay more in one way or another.

I am glad that I was able to use up most of my UA miles for the trip to Asia before all of the new restrictions.

Ouch.

I'm glad the next time I have to fly is next summer. And that's going to be overseas so most likely a foreign carrier. Thankfully.

Looking at that link makes it even worse as the bag can only be used to be stored under the seat so a normal carry on bag isn't even allowed for your one bag.

And it's not like they will reduce the price but instead charge more for the same quality you used to get.

Supposedly this is so they can introduce even lower fares to compete with airlines like Spirit. Normally I'd be very skeptical that the fares would actually be cheaper but given some of the recent United pricing I've seen perhaps they will be cheaper (Bought two TATL flights ~$500 RT and one for ~$300RT). I will admit that I dislike the scramble for overhead space in later boarding groups so I may, personally, see a benefit as I will pay more to get an assigned seat and my boarding group may get smaller as more people move to group 5

Overall though I'm not really surprised since Americans prefer cheap albeit shitty flights. Spirit is, by far, the most complained about airline but keeps adding double digit growth. Until that stops I would expect more changes like this

Flying is such a shitty experience with travel to the airport, TSA lines, delays, baggage claim, car rental, snakes on the planes, drunk pilots, stewardesses that don't bang the passengers like they do in good porn movies, etc, why pay more for a better airline? Having a slightly better sandwich and an extra bag of peanuts is not going to help you enjoy the day, so minimize the damage. Pay as little as possible so that you're not paying a premium to get fucked anyway.

Americans demand the cheapest possible pricing so you get the cheapest possible experience. Enjoy.

Its much better if you combine PreCheck with lounges, a business\first class seat, and a car rental from National. So many lines skipped. :)

There are additional reasons that may appeal to some like seat recline and fee structure but you also get a more reliable operation with greatly improved routing options in the event of flight disruptions. According to BTS.gov Spirit had 30% of their flights arrived late compared to 20% for United while Delta has less than half of the delays Spirit does. Now combine that with no interline agreements and its quite a mess when things go wrong

Back in around 2009-2010 I was flying 16 times a year for work all within the domestic US. I lived near Newark Airport in NJ and that was Continental's hub so that's what I flew. It really wasn't that bad. I learned within a few trips that the best seats were the 2nd row of exit seats - they had lots of leg room plus they reclined, unlike the 1st row of exit seats which did not recline. They didn't cost more back then either, maybe they do now.

Having two carry on items was never questioned in the slightest. Continental was not known for being great, but honestly it was quite good for me. No major delays. When I missed a flight home from San Diego from being up all night banging some chick, it was $50 to get on a later one.

Eventually after a bunch of months I started getting bumped into first class regularly - now that was so much more comfy. Shortly before 2 years of flying occurred I lost the job after we merged with another company. But still had my miles. I used about 75K flying roundtrip from Newark to Cyprus for a 2+ week vacation. Nice. That was almost a $2K ticket.

A little while after I lost the job Continental merged with United. I haven't heard good things since. This article isn't helping.

Being poor, I almost never fly. But when I did this year on American Airlines they let me bring one carry on and one "personal item". I did not know a "personal item" could be like a book bag or something that you could put even more clothes and stuff in. I hope they don't change that policy if I ever fly again...

Ouch.

The last time i flew with Delta was nice, before that on NWA not so much....i'll never fly with Air Canada again if i can avoid it, fuck them and their nasty flight waitresses. Singapore Airline was great, Air New Zealand was amazing, Qantas and Virgin where shitty...EVA air was middle of the road, same with Philippine Airlines. I'm taking American Airline shortly, how are they?

Fuck that airline. we have to use a travel agency for corporate travel and their website. spirit is always cheaper but at god awful times. if we dont pick the cheapest flight its noted on our travel log and we have to give reason why we did not pick it. thankfully the corporate goons have always taken my reason. but i think my luck is running out.

their boarding sucks. you think that being in Group 1 you would board first after the disabled, uniformed military, families... but noooooo if you part of the gazillion rewards programs they have you go before group 1. so by the time Group 1 is called half the plane has already boarded.

I did use all 3 of the big US airlines (United, American, and Delta) for trips out of the US and I will have to say they are way behind foreign airlines such as Japan, ANA, Korea, Asia, etc. in every category.

Amazing how they have managed to turn flying into some kind of hellish cross between riding a Greyhound bus and the Pennsylvania Railroad right before they ended passenger service.

There is one rewards program on AA but several tiers of status. Now back behind the ropes commoner...I have a plane to board. ;)

Thats not all that uncommon these days. Delta boarding group 1 is actually group 3 or 4 depending on how they bunch up the medallion\partner groups that go ahead of it

Amazing how they have managed to turn flying into some kind of hellish cross between riding a Greyhound bus and the Pennsylvania Railroad right before they ended passenger service.

They also managed to greatly decrease the cost of flying
