Squirrels around here have gotten a graphic reminder of their place in the food chain with the return of raptors like hawks and falcons. They used to scurry around my back yard with complete abandon. Now, you rarely see them out in the open and rarely more than one or two at a time.

yeah, they are super fat and quite aggressive on any college campus. The worst ones that I have seen were at Berkeley. There is a heavily-trafficked area outside of the building where I worked, in the eucalyptus grove, with several squirrel families/colonies...whatever. Those bastards don't just come up to you--they jump on your legs, run up your jacket, and some will jump on you from behind demanding food. Always tourists stopping to feed them and take photos of how cute they are, creating these savage little monsters.

Give it a few more years. It took decades to get raptors breading and repopulating the area and that was with help from a raptor preservation group. Now you can even see them in NYC. A couple of years ago there was even a nesting pair somewhere on the Park Ave Met Life building. No raptors around here so they scurry around the campuses like they own it
Similar thing happened here. I was looking out the kitchen window and there was a squirrel out in the open on the grass. Woosh. Falcon I think came down and snatched his furry little butt. But I guess since it wasWhen I was actually in school, i was walking through the main brickyard when a red tail swooped down and nabbed a squirrel off the top of a trashcan. It didn't fly away, though. He landed on the ground near people and ripped it apart first...much to the terror of onlookers. It was glorious.
F***ing racists. I'll bet they have them burn little white crosses under the nests of the black squirrels. :sneaky:The University of Texas even founded the Albino Squirrel Preservation Society.
