On my trip to Cancun on the 18th, I went w/my girlfriend (now fiance) and another couple met us over there. When the other couple got there, the girl in the couple did not have her luggage. She did not receive it until the 20th, and as anyone who is a girl (or has a girl) knows, it wasn't fun for her w/out clothes for 2 days. They were flying AA btw.

So on the way home on the 25th we get to our first stop in ATL, and my girlfriends luggage did not make it on the plane. So she did not have any of her clothes back home until the following night, and she packed very heavy so a lot of her good clothes were not with her for a day. We flew Delta FWIW.

Granted that is not THAT big of a problem, we talked to someone in ATL who had been traveling for 40+ years with her husband and she gave us a good tip:

Pack half of your clothes and half of your SO's clothes in one bag, and the other half of your clothes and the other half of your SO's clothes in another bag.

It seems so damn common sense, but I just had never thought about it. I never thought we would lose a bag travelling, but it seems to happen more than I had thought. And something that simple could solve the problem so atleast if one bag is lost, we'll have enough clothes to last us until the bag arrives. The chances of 2 bags of ours being lost is very slim.

Pass the word on!

Lost luggage is EXTREMELY common. Most of the time it is simply delayed until the next day. A complete loss of luggage is rare.

I've done that. But more commonly, I just put one change of clothes in the carry on. There is virtually no chance that I'd lose both the carry on AND the checked baggage (unless the plane crashed, and then I'd have bigger worries).

Thanks man :)

Yah I did a crapload of stuff.

First swam w/the dolphins, then went to Isla Mujeres, then did a day snorkel trip, then went to Xcaret, then went to some Mayan excursion.

Then we went to eat and went out almost every night to the clubs heh.

I have all my pics/vids uploaded however I'm waiting to talk to this other person who went w/us if she wants me to add her pics to my page. Once I hear back from her I'll probably make a post on here. I took tons and TONS of pics, and have a bunch of little 30 second videos too of stuff we did.

And yea after talkin to the flight attendant on our return flight from ATL to DCA, it seems "delayed" luggage is very common, and that they will often take off luggage due to weight constraints on the airplane.

If you go through Philly, you can pretty much count on losing your luggage. I always pack all my medicine, toiletries, and a change of underwear/shirt into my carry-on.

The real trick is to have her pack her 1 bag first. Then surprise her by splitting it into two bags. If you tell her from the get go she's packing in both bags you only end up with a 1/4 of a bag :(

swimming with the dolphins was WAY worth it. It was so damn cool and just somethign you cannot do in many places.

the underground river in Xcaret was pretty cool, although a bit crowded. The water was cold enough that it actually felt good, because the water and pool at our hotel was pretty warm :p.

however the underground river that I swam at in the Mayan excursion we went to was better IMO. it was freshwater and the caves were MUCH deeper. you could literally look down and would see into the darkness. it was pretty damn impressive and we saw divers going down into the caves from these guide ropes all over the place. it was also a lot less crowded at this place.
