Looks like Google will finally cut off access to GV on May 14th, 2014, it's been a good couple years since I got my Obi, time to look for other VOIP services.

Aww, the free ride is over. People are surprised? Really?

Suck it up princess. My home voip setup works way better than GV ever could. Sure, it's not free, but it's still a pittance.

So what exactly does that mean? Obihai will not work but there will be other devices? or they will charge something like Skpye?

Will the GV app still work from Android phone? or will be on through desktops only?

OR will GV go away for ever...

What's your home VoIP setup?

I use:

Anveo (www.anveo.com - please, feel free to hit me up for a referral # if you decide you're into REAL VOIP)
A server in my closet running FreePBX (which is technically optional - actually is a VM running FreePBX)
Real VOIP phones: 1x Snom 870, 1x Snom 821, 1x Snom m3. I also use CSipSimple on my cell phone occasionally

What do I pay?

- I pay $2 per month per DID (those are those cool little 10 digit things you all like to call "phone numbers"), which I have two of.
- I pay $0.80 per month for the E911 recovery fee since I have E911 registered on only one of my SIP accounts (part of the reason I run my own PBX is so you can dial 911 from any phone in the house)
- All incoming minutes are free
- All outgoing minutes are billed at $0.01/minute for domestic US calling

Those of you with ATAs like the Obihai could technically ship the VOIP server and real VOIP phones. I'm just hardcore like that. Plus I get to do all sorts of cool shit with my VOIP setup that something like an Obihai can't.

Technically you could get away with as cheap as $1.80/month if you barely ever use your phone. $2.80/month gives you unlimited free incoming minutes. Sorry, there's no "flat rate" unlimited everything. You'd need to go with someone like Callcentric for that and pay a good bit more.

Interesting, but having a server box in my closet is too hardcore for me. Thx for the info though.

Hardcore? That's a fun hobby. You could get in cheap with a RaspberryPI. Of course, if you're going through the hassle of setting up a server, you could add a bunch of other interesting services. Host your own cloud storage, make an idiotbook sans idiots, stream audio/video, run an i2prouter... The possibilities are endless.

It starts with a Raspberry Pi and ends with 47 TB of porn and your wife moving out.

Profit? :ninja: :awe:

Sucks that they are doing this. Not surprised but I thought it would last longer. I'll probably have my obihai gv number forward to a $2/month plan. I'm more bummed about it messing up my talkatone on my cell phone.

Like I said, if you already have an Obi, you're good to go. No server needed.

I run a server because I wanted REAL voip phones - and I wanted several of them, not POTS handsets. Plus I wanted the experience of being able to run an actual VOIP setup. I also run a server because I can... I put a ESXi server up because I wanted to replace the plastic box consumer routers with something more powerful (pfSense), be able to mirror my colocated VPSes, have a file server and media server for the house, have a central PVR for the house, have a VPN server for the house... and it just so happen that I could also run a VOIP server on it too! Behold: The power of VMs.

Is it overkill? Fuck yes. But it's what I do and it drives my wife nuts.

Running Anveo + an ATA like an Obi will be basically like using Vonage.

What kind of cool shit can you do? Can you give specific examples?

All this nerd talk has me hot and bothered :awe:
