PSA: For those of you with ingrown toenails

I recall that there seem to be a fair amount of ATers who suffer from ingrown toenails. I too have my fair share, and the trainer at school taught me a little trick to keep the nails growing straight instead of outwards into the flesh.

Cut a V-shaped notch into the center of your toenail, almost down to the quick, and the nail will grow inwards towards the gap, releiving pressure and preventing future ingrown nails. I hope that description is illustrative enough. Cheers!

Interesting, but that's be a PITA because it'd snag on all kinds of stuff.
Yeah, and I don't think my gf will appreciate the razor sharp notches in my toenails in bed under the covers.

Thanks for the idea though, if mine get really bad, I'll try it.

Thanks for the tip, Scorch. Now, do you think my dremel will do the job? 😛

Yes, yes it will!

If you've got a dremel... you should be able to take care of those ingrown nails anyway 🙂 😛

I round off the corners of the edge so it doesn't catch, although I have had a few incidents where half of my nail suddenly rips off 🙂 Still better than having them ingrown though

I may try this if I get another bad one. A few years ago I had one so bad that I had to have it fixed surgically. I've never had a problem with that one toe since.... I should go see the podiatrist to get the other big toe done.

yeah i'm pretty much in the same boat. one big toe i had to get part of the root killed. after it all healed it just looked like i had a thinner nail, sort of, and i didn't have any trouble with it after that. but my other toe has been giving me trouble the last few years. i've heard this V advice before and didn't put much stock in it, but i suppose i'll give it a shot. couldn't hurt, anyway (pardon the pun).

That trip to the podiatrist was worth every penny. My foot felt better after the numbing wore off than it did when I walked (limped) into the office.
