ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time)

I live in AZ, and we dont have a helmet law. Naturally, many (I would guess about half) of the riders I see not only dont wear a helmet, but ride around in shorts, t shirts, and even flip flops. Idiots. Interestingly enough, its usually cruiser riders doing this. Although I rode the last 20 years on cruisers, I never did. (I ride an FJR now). There are actually advantages to wearing ATGATT. Imagine a hair dryer on high blowing against your bare skin. HOT! Now, even with a shirt over your skin, its not nearly as hot. Your gear actually deflects alot of heat off of you...well, unless youre sitting still in traffic. And with so many choices for hot weather gear available now, there's no reason to not protect yourself. It's not a question of how cool or comfortable you think you might be, it's what do you want to be wearing when you DO crash? (And you will, someday.)

I found a great website to which I have no affiliation, with a great video from a girl who survived a 500+ foot slide across the freeway doing 100+ MPH wearing only a helmet. She is now an instructor and promoter of ATGATT. Here is her site: http://www.rockthegear.org/

Be safe out there guys. Stay hydrated, and drive with the awareness that every cage (car) is out to kill you.

Those that don't wear the right gear, such as a helmet , will become victims of Darwin much faster. ;)

Not that it's really any of your business...or anyone else's for that matter, but I do wear almost all the gear all the time. Regular jeans are the only thing non-gear that I wear sometimes.

I see people riding in shorts and t-shirts all the time around here. It doesn't even phase me anymore when I see it. I'm sure as hell not going to lecture anyone about it. :awe:

Speaking of helmet laws. In states with helmet laws, nearly 100% of riders wear a helmet every time they ride. In states without helmet laws only about 50-60% of riders wear a helmet.

Honestly, I'm for helmet laws.

most of the people i see riding like assholes are usually not wearing leathers (or any appropriate clothing for riding), so let's not encourage them to stay around longer mm'kay?

In my first ten years of riding, sometimes I wore a helmet and sometimes I didn't. Then, one day when I happened to be wearing one, I got creamed by a VW who swung wide to make a turn. I was stopped in traffic at the time and I rolled up the hood across the windshield, flipped upside down flying past the car and striking a fire hydrant with my head. I came too with my arm wrapped around the hydrant sitting on the curb. I took off my helmet and saw two deep grooves that made me think of an old fashioned ashtray. I kissed that lid and tossed it in the dumpster and went out and bought a new helmet. I've been wearing one ever since, been riding about 30 years now.

Even when California had no helmet laws, I wore a helmet.
But I must admit, I did just start wearing a jacket with CE approved armor in the shoulders and elbows and a spine pad. I still wear just jeans.

What the fuck was that chick doing going 100+ MPH? Too bad she was wearing the helmet. Riders like that should be shot. It's not just their lives they are endangering.

Donorcycles are awesome! My wife has had some gory ones she has taken care of. Though the really gory ones dont make it to the hospital.

Riding in crazy heat is brutal, and full leather actually helps protect you from the convection heating that the high speed/high temp air. Very much more so when its humid too, found that out in Texas when I tried to go from central Texas to Dallas in 85F 60% weather. It was totally draining.

Does AGATT apply to scooterists? or are they even worth considering...?

It's unfortunate because there's nothing better than city riding with jeans and a t-shirt.

Except living to ride another day.

If a person is not willing to take any risk, there's no sense in riding. I'm sure I'll eat my words one of these days, but it's personal preference (though I do wear a helmet, just usually not much for a jacket).

She's a nice person and learned quite a bit from the experience and has used that to try and educate others.
