I checked and it's still working. So is this godaddy being good to us or is this standard practice ? I have no need for the domain name anymore and am quite shocked to see it potentially working for another month+.

Most companies do that, if not all.

The length of time varies from registrar to registrar, but most keep it in an "aging pool" for ~30 days.

Domains normally do not work while in a redemption period
