Foxconn faces leaked report of worker abuse, violence
Apple, Dell, HP supplier a 'prison'

A soon-to-be-released study will reveal that Taiwan-based Foxconn, mega-manufacturer of a broad range of electronics from the iPhone to the Wii, engages in widespread employee abuse, harsh punishment, illegal labor practices, and unsafe working conditions.

The Beijing-based Global Times reported Friday that the study was conducted by 60 students and teachers from 20 universities in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and involved 14 investigators who were able to "enter the company and experience ‘life inside Foxconn' themselves."

According to the sources who leaked the report to the Global Times, 16.4 per cent of Foxconn employees have been subject to "some kind of corporal violence" — as was shown in a recent video of employees being beaten by Foxconn security.

Over 38 per cent claim to have had their privacy invaded
and — perhaps unsurprisingly — 54.6 per cent were reported to be "indignant towards ... management".

This June, Foxconn made news — after a spate of worker suicides — by announcing that it would increase employee pay by 30 per cent. The survey, however, claims that the raises amounted to only 9.1 per cent, and that workers "were deprived of many of their welfare terms like subsidies, bonuses and so on."

Interns were singled out for special abuse. The Global Times notes that interns are only allowed to work eight hours per day, but that in some plants they work 10-hour shifts, and in some cases are forced to work night shifts.

Having no contracts with the interns, Foxconn doesn't have to pay "social welfare" costs for them, meaning that if they are injured at work — "due to the lack of supervision," as explains the Global Times — the interns have to pay their own medical expenses, since they're not covered by either Foxconn or the government.

Wow. Should I stop buying Foxconn products?

These are some hard times for China. Things will get beter in the future as the country gets richer. Remember that USA and UK were horrible shit holes like this as well. Remember those huge movements toward unions? Those happened for a reason. It will happen in China some day.

If you stop buying foxconn products you wont be able to post here much longer, and you need to buy a horse, and put one of those orange triangles on your new "Vehicle".

Haha.

The country will never get richer. It's a military state. The people get next to nothing while the government gets everything.

Foxconn makes pretty much nearly everything that is computer related. Right now, the majority of us have at least 1 part made by Foxconn in our machines. Weeeee! I can sue for corporate abuse!!!

is anyone remotely surprised by this?

People in the western world love to be hypocrites. We pretend to care about workers rights even though every single one of us knows abuse happens in countries like China. I could go on a huge rant about hypocrisy in sex, race, religion, etc but it doesn't seem worth it. Let's keep this about how much China sucks :)

Yet Chinese workers are falling over themselves to get a chance to work there.

Aren't they the place with suicide nets?

You might be thinking of Japan. In japan you are expected to kill yourself every time someone on the internet says you should kill yourself. Naturally, the suicide rate is astoundingly high.

They should have a hot line you can call, where an employee gets his ass beat when there's a manufacturing defect. That should improve quality pretty quickly :^D

That's probably better than what they have right now. Now, it's all about quotas. Make this many or we beat your ass. It doesn't matter if the motherboard actually works or not, just make the damn thing.

Like I said before, it's a Chinese problem. I couldn't care less. It's their culture and it would be disrespectful of me to tell them how to live their life.
