The incredible boot times and app loading times put the hooks in. The almost instantaneous load times in games seals the deal. You're officially hooked and you find you have a handful of them in the house and at least one in each computer. You start looking to buy more since they are so limited in storage space and a lot of games are using 8gb of space minimum. You'll find your wallet empty and your woman bitchin. Don't say I didn't warn you.
 
I'am waiting until SSD drives cost less then $100 for a terabyte, then I'll buy. But I'll have to upgrade my wifes system first so she stays happy. She has this thing about computers, she wants to make sure her system is on par with mine and the kids systems.

When the Intel 120gig drives hit they had deals selling them for $149. I haven't seen them below 189 now. I should have pulled the trigger on a few then.

You do realize that technology is one of those things that sees almost an exponential decline when it comes to prices over time, right? Look at standard hard drives, it wasn't more than 10 years ago that purchasing 1TB of regular storage cost as much, if not more, than 1TB of SSD storage today.

Give it a little time, I predict that within the next 5/10 years a 1TB SSD will be very doable.
 
SSD prices haven't moved much in the past year..exponential doesn't say what time frame..it can look linear on shorter timescales lol

saying 5+ years is not really useful since that is several lifetimes in the technology world
 
This thread makes me want to put an SSD into my mom's computer. Just because.

(I'm sticking with magnetic disks for my rigs for the time being. Need the storage space.)

but I think the person you quoted is laughing because thats a solid 3 years away atleast....

24mm or 28mm nand is about to hit the streets and will trickle out for the next year? then it will be probably another year before we get small process?

I'm hoping the new sandforce gets me 120gb for 175 or so of the new tech.

yeah I can get 120gb of the mid range kingston but they write hella slow(compared to the nice sf1200 ala vertex 2's)

As for looking linear. Everything looks linear in short time frames.
5+ years may be seen as several lifetimes in the technology world (even though it isn't....) but for the average consumer, this is how often they might buy new computers.

Why don't you put it in your main pc? Are you telling us your ma is more of a power user than you are? :colbert:

Make the SSD your OS/APP drive, and relegate your rotaries to games and data duty.

My SSD with Windows 7 and all apps installed and my 9GB work folder is only using 29GB of space. I used to keep all my files in 5 folders on my desktop, but those are way too large for my SSD, so I just made symlinks to them so I didn't have to reconfigure the 9000 options for my back up program when I reinstalled it and imported the backup profiles.

Do iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

i don't buy that chart, i have the order history for my 60GB OCZ agility for feb/2010 and it was $170 with a $40 rebate..the same drive today is $125..

by that chart the price should have fallen 3x-5x in a year..

No kidding. I'm amazed at what people will spend on wheels and tires for car. My $195 Intel x25-M 120gb drive would barely cover the cost for the valves and balancing.

Actually, it is. The cost to manufacture an SSD drive is directly related to the cost of NAND memory.

Now, there may be various marketing factors that play into the actual price, but suffice it to say that SSD's price is going to trend very closely with NAND prices (unless some other memory tech comes out to replace NAND)
 
Don't worry, they'll keep dropping. It's already affordable to have an SSD boot drive, which is awesome. I hadn't upgraded my computer in about 5 years, when I realized I could buy a terabyte SATA for under $100, I had to jump on it! I remember buying a 2GB Seagate for almost $300, and it doesn't seem thaaaat long ago.

I'll definitely be buying me an SSD in the near future, no doubt about that. The WD Black is pretty quick for SATA but let's face it, even a good SATA disk is still pretty god damn slow compared to the speeds the rest of the system operate at.
