Seriously. I still don't know how people fall for this shit.
I'm playing L4D2, and all of a sudden, I get the message "(Friend) Amazing offer from steam and NVIDIA. 3 FREE games of your choise just go to: **LINK DELETED** and claim your games." (No, I haven't clicked or gone to the link, and I'm not going to.)
So, I reply "Someone hacked your account?"
Him- "no its real"
Me- "Yeah, you have fun with that. Learn what a .tk address is."
Him- (Friend) has changed their name to Hello.

So I text him up, and he said he entered his info and then signed out of the site. I ask him if he changed his name on Steam, and he said no as he wasn't connected.

Me- Congratulations, you're Steam account is now hacked.

Seriously, I don't know how people can fall for this stuff, but if you've got technically inclined friends, please explain these things.

Deleted the link to save people from themselves.

in his defense it looks just like the steam community page. Copied source no doubt. .tk is a free domain that lasts for 25 days if there's no traffic. Not all .tks are illegit, but it's mostly crap.

Lol @ thread title and second poster. 🙂

At least steam has a little better security in changing passwords. If you want to change your password, you're required to generate an authorization code first. But, I'm sure there's ways around that too.

This is really abundant in WoW. In my expeience, MMORPG players tend to be much less technically inclined than FPS gamers, and of course MMORPG property is worth a lot more, so there is a lot more incentive. Now there's talk of including an authenticator; a $7 piece of hardware that wirelessly receives ever-changing codes synced with your in-game password to prevent phishing, with the next expansion... I'm fine with paying monthly, but the thought of having to pay extra because so many people out there are clueless and refuse to learn anything pisses me off.

RSA hardware keys aren't wireless they use an algorithm to generate the code. They are out right now you don't need to wait for the expansion.
