I work in the 1 hour photo at CVS, and today really, really sucked. I got in at 4, and there's approxamately 8 jobs due at 5PM. Sweet. I nearly kill myself doing those, to find 2 more for 5:30. Day continues like this. My dinner break is postponed for an hour, then two. Just before, the cashier asks me if I have any photo for <name>. I tell her that I have it, but it hasn't been processed because there was no time marked on it.
A little word on procedure at CVS: When there is a queue of photo to be done, any photo that does not have a time marked on it goes to the back, to be processed at the next opportunity when the machine is available. Does this sound odd to you? Seems legitimate to me.
Apparently the girl who came in to pick up her photos doesn't think so. She dropper off her photos 1.5 hours before, I remember seeing them left on the counter with no time. She must write hella fast, 'cause I only have my back turned to the counter for 30 seconds at a time processing film to go into the machine. So there's the film left there with no time on it. You'd think if she really needed the film in an hour she'd have told somebody about it.
So they(her and a BF) are at the register, acting like it's the end of the world because the don't have their pictures. They are so pissed, I'm wondering if they're catching a plane in the next 35 seconds or so. So she proceeds to tear me a new one while I try to explain the policy to her. I offer to put her photos at the top priority, but she asks for the film back and tells me she's going to Wal*Mart. Not in a rush so much, I guess. She pockets the film and proceeds to trip out. It's at this point that I wonder if she is on some kind of medication, or maybe it's that time of the month, perhaps both. She is starting to get rather loud antd attract the attention of other customers, all the while I'm remaining calm and trying to explain to her that when there are 18 other rolls of film that a 5 minutes from late, a roll of film with no name marked on it does not take priority. (I came within 7 seconds of a deadline today, BTW) She says that policy sucks and all film should be processed ASAP in the order it is recieved, regardless of time marked. Sounds socialist. Luckily, her elevated voice has attracted the attention of a manager at this point, who takes over. Same banter, different recipient. She leaves eventually, and the next couple of people in line have already marked the time they'll be returning for their film.
Her shenanigans cause me to miss a deadline, woman is pissed.
On another note:
Never, ever take your film to a 1 Hour Photo to be processed unless is cannot wait. The chances of us torching your film are notably siginifigant. I had to make a few calls this week. If you can, [Edit: Go digital.] take your film to a professional developer and give them a week to do it(or as much as they ask plus some). Failing that, go to a well established 1 Hour Photo and do SEND OUT. Nothing in-house.
To conclude, I am surrounded by idiots and unmaintained machines.
