PSA: Do NOT buy Epson printers

Here goes my weak rant. :colbert:

I usually only print in black and white with my Epson cx8400 printer. Today, the printer suddenly freezes, displaying an error message saying that my "cyan" ink is too low. I wondered why I needed to replace cyan cartridge as I never even use any color printing.

It turns out that Epson freezes their printers even though the ink is not actually low. The printer thinks the ink is low depending on the number of pages printed, not the actual use of the ink. I can't even go into setup past this error message. There is no way to bypass the error message besides buying the un-needed ink.

They are pretty much forcing people to buy their cartridges even though they are not needed. What a shitty way to do business. I decided to buy some third party chip resetter to override this error. I don't wanna give Epson anymore money.

Any other printer companies do this also?

yes, all of them try to force you into buying cartridges or toner before they are necessary.

I know with some HP laser printers, you can tape over or block the toner-level sensor...allowing you to print, by some reports, YEARS after the machine claims it was empty.

OP just wanna rant.

I think most printer companies are doing the same thing... count the number of printed pages.

Well if there is ink in the cyan cartridge cant you just take it out and put it back in as if a new one and trick the system or something? i mean either way its retarded lol

I've had tons of problems with all-in-one lexmarks... this latest one won't take a refurbed ink cartridge (the only kind my company will order for me) halfway through its use (wtf?!)... so I went back to my Epson photo printer from eons ago and guess what... the black ink still fricken works. Amazing if you ask me. Only problem is no vista64 support for this thing... good thing work laptop is still XP.

The printer doesn't detect how much ink is actually in the cartridge. It only reads the chip on the cartridge. The chip "expires" after a certain number of pages regardless how much ink was used. 😱

I've heard that there is a ink cartridge reset tool that you can use to trick the printer into thinking that you have a new cartridge.

Welcome to the world of inkjet printing, Sleepwhere. If you really print that much, get a CFS system. Otherwise, you'll just have to get a laser printer or learn to cough up the dough.

Ive had my Epson 1200 photo printer for 8 years or so...never a problem. Epson is the only printer brand that I buy.

Old printers aren't the problem. It's the new lines of printers from all these companies - they're out to rip you off big time. Chipped cartridges to force "expiration", not printing B&W when the color is empty, and only allowing branded cartridges are just some of the crap printer companies are pulling.

my laser printer does that

Once I printer 3,000 or 6,000 pages (depends which toner I get), I can print no more. Even if pages are coming out fine. It sucks.

I recently bought an Epson Workforce 610 - it is a pretty good AIO unit.

I was fully aware of the chip issue with the cartridges before I bought it. My plan is to buy a refill kit from this vendor on eBay: http://stores.ebay.com/PrecisionColors

He has modified the replacement cartridges to auto-reset when low. You simply refill them yourself like the good 'ol days.

P.S. This is the specific kit I am going to order for my workforce 610 --> LINK
