I think you underestimate the type of indoctrination that the people of NK have endured. Simply relocating and assuming that the majority of them want that, is a bit premature. Further, assuming that they ouster of DPRNK and their willingness to remain and live in NK under a democratic society is equally premature.

I don't underestimate what a single generation does to brainwashing. Handle this now and in 10 years it's over, the people will learn to adapt. Stick your head in the sand and in 10 years they could have bigger weapons and be even more insane. This problem won't go away by ignoring it.

It's hard to know how much they blame their rulers, the only survival mechanism there is complete subserviency. The odds on any of them speaking their true feelings are minimal. :-(

yeah, very hard to know the true feelings of any of the citizens, or as a whole, but I doubt easy acceptance from a population that has been raised to know nothing else. Of course, many escape for a reason, so there has to be shared knowledge, somewhere inside, about what life is like outside.

it's not about burying one's head and ignoring the problem: it's about recognizing the fact that this isn't as simple as applying a band-aid to the situation. lol--everything would be fine in 10 years?

With this type of understanding of the situation, you could have been a well-paid adviser to the Bush Admin c. 2002-2003. :p

10 years out, Iraq sure as shit is rainbows and sunshine.

Going to take a lot longer then 10 years. Those born under the communist regime will need to fade from all aspects of society and younger generations growing up under a functional democratic government filter through. And note the functional part. Transitioning from such a broken system of government as communism takes time, much longer than 10 years. The USSR fell in 1992 and is still a mess.

But other than that, I agree. Dealing with the problem now is better than kicking down the curb. Any internal revolution would likely be put down fast until there was an international force pressing the NK military. With the levels of food, fuel, and spare parts they have available, they won't be able to hold for any length of time in a modern conflict. Unless China supplies them.

I'd guess that life is so shitty there if you cross the wrong people that you're willing to risk anything to get away and figure life outside can't be any worse than watching your family starve or get taken away one by one and knowing that your children will also have to go through it.. :(

I was hoping the son would be actually reasonable, but I guess that is way too much to expect from someone raised as the heir to such a messed up regime.

I think that the rulers there know there's going to be some payback of biblical size if they loosen their grip.

To them, the outside world is filled with dragons and lakes of poison, all brought on by the capitalist pigs.

well, they do live next to china, so they've got good basis for that
